Religious School Educator, Grades K-5


Temple Israel of the City of New York, a vibrant, engaged, mid-size Reform congregation on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, is looking for creative, enthusiastic, and dedicated Religious School teachers to join our team for the 2020-2021 school year. Our curriculum is interactive, modern, and rooted in seven overarching values which are designed to engage, inspire, and guide our learners as they navigate the world around them.

Our schedule of classes is listed below, and we may be openings in or all of the grades and days. The physical location of each session below represents our “normal” program, but please note that we are currently planning for a school year that may include virtual learning for part or even all of the year. In-person classes may need to take place virtually until such a time as it is safe to gather in large groups. Teacher flexibility with these changes and uncertainties is a must.
--Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, & 3rd grade – Mondays, 4-6pm (in person
--3rd grade – Wednesdays, 4-6pm (in person*)
--4th & 5th grades – Mondays, 4-6pm (virtual learning) and Wednesday, 4-6pm (in person*)
--4th & 5th grades – Sundays, 9-11am (virtual learning) and Wednesdays, 4-6pm (in person*)

Candidates for all grades should:
--Be proficient in using educational technologies (web-based resources, virtual meeting rooms, etc.) while simultaneously maintaining the decorum and learning of the group.
--Be proficient in leading both virtual and in-person learning.
--Have strong communication skills, written and oral, for interacting with students and parents.
--Patience to assist students and families with accessing online materials.
--Have prior experience with experiential learning.
--Be comfortable working with both children and families.
--Have a strong sense of their own Jewish identity.
--Be experienced in building community in creative ways
--Have prior teaching or camp experience (preferred).
--Possess a sense of humor.
--Respond well to feedback.
--Thrive on building meaningful relationships.
--Experience working in settings with children with special needs is a plus.
--Be creative, with the ability to augment, customize and adjust existing lesson plans, as needed
--Understand how to relate to students with different interests and guide/coach learners to enduring understandings.
--Be able to read/chant the typical prayers in a standard Reform service (preferred for K-3rd, required for 4th & 5th).
