Beth Sholom Temple (BST) in Fredericksburg , VA seeks a part-time Rabbi or Cantor to provide Fredericksburg’s Jewish community with support for religious programming, life-cycle events, pastoral care, and other Jewish life and community interfaith events. We seek somebody who can flexibly join the local community on major holidays, including High Holy Days, occasional Shabbat services and religious school sessions, and for other occasional community programs.
Affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism, BST is a warm and welcoming community with just over 100 membership units (a mix of families, couples, and singles). Members come from diverse Jewish backgrounds, and many member families are interfaith families. Our Rabbi typically helps support several candidates for conversion at any given time. With the support of a strong group of lay leaders, we hold services every Friday night and Saturday morning, using URJ’s Mishkan T’filah. We have an active religious school serving approximately 40 students in grades K-7, meeting Sunday mornings and, for those in grades 3-7, on Wednesday evenings for additional instruction in Hebrew. Teachers are typically members of the BST community. The congregation has a full-time administrative Office Manager and a part-time Principal and Assistant Principal supporting the religious school.
We welcome applications from Rabbis or Cantors ordained within or outside of the Reform movement (through Hebrew Union College or another major, accredited seminary), provided they work within a Reform environment, including use of the Mishkan T’filah. Candidates who are ordained Cantors may also be ordained within or outside of the Reform movement (again, either through HUC or another major, accredited seminary), but must work within a Reform environment, including use of melodies commonly used in the Reform liturgy. Candidates who are Cantors must also perform duties usually associated with the role of Rabbi, as outlined above.
More information about Beth Sholom Temple can be found at bstva.org. Review of applications will begin in mid-February. Start date will be around June 1, 2020.
