Gateways Jewish Education Program Teacher

The Jewish Education Program Teacher is a part-time position responsible for leading one or more classrooms of students in Jewish educational activities, especially for classes that include students with more severe disabilities. Students in the Gateways Sunday program range in age from 5 to 18 and have a variety of special educational needs. The classroom teachers are encouraged to be creative, dynamic, and innovative in designing lesson plans to meet this wide range of needs. In addition, the position will work in Gateways’ B’nei Mitzvah Academy, instructing, assisting the B’nei Mitzvah coordinator with preparing and creating classroom materials, and working with families and individual students in preparing for bar/bat mitzvah ceremonies. The position reports to the Jewish Education Program Director. The Sunday program meets from 9:30am-1:30pm during the school year, excluding Jewish holidays and public school vacations and the B’nei Mitzvah Academy meets on Sundays (9:30 am – 11:00 am) and Wednesdays (4:30 pm – 6:00 pm). Key Responsibilities
1. Develop or adapt curriculum and teach Sunday class(es)
• Assume primary responsibility for teaching class(es) and provide mentoring and feedback to one-to-one teen volunteers (classroom aides)
• Create developmentally appropriate lesson plans with student specific accommodations for each class taught
• Prepare and submit weekly lesson plans and supplementary materials, including plans for individual accommodations and modifications
• Prepare a weekly communication letter to parents including curriculum and activities for the week
• Meet regularly with Program Director and/or other education staff (e.g. other teachers) to review past classes and plan upcoming units and lessons

2. Student Progress Monitoring
• Review students’ forms, reports and school IEPs
• Speak with parents and/or school if more information as needed, at beginning of year and/or during the school year
• Meet with volunteer(s) (one to one aides) to review each child’s needs and goals beginning of the year, and additional times as needed
• Document weekly student progress and participation using data collection, photographs, anecdotes, etc.
• Write mid-year and end-of-year progress report for each child

3. B’nei Mitzvah Academy Assistance
• Work with coordinator of the B’nei Mitzvah Academy to modify and implement curriculum
• Prepare individualized materials for students in advance of each class
• Provide support to area synagogues in preparation for students’ bar/bat mitzvah ceremony, including onsite visits to synagogues and consultation with clergy

4. Required meetings/attendance
• Be on site at the Sunday program and the Wednesday B’nei Mitzvah Academy by 30 minutes prior to first scheduled session on class days
• Participate in scheduled sessions with meeting time in between as needed
• Classroom clean-up at the end of the sessions
• Participate in mandatory program staff meetings and volunteer trainings at beginning of year, and as scheduled throughout the year (calendar provided in advance of each school year)

5. Perform other duties as requested by the Program Director

• BA/BS in special education or related field
• Experience working with students with special needs required, especially for work with children with severe disabilities
• Knowledge of Jewish holidays, customs, and traditions; ability to read Hebrew preferred but not required; experience tutoring b’nei mitzvah preferred
• Passion for working with children of all abilities
• Training and/or certification in severe disabilities preferred
• Training and/or experience with AAC and other assistive technology preferred
