Are you creative and collaborative, and do you love learning with students?
Yavneh Day School is seeking a long term substitute for a first-grade class, starting in January 2020.
Yavneh Day School is an independent Jewish day school in Los Gatos, CA. Our student-centered approach to education provides opportunities for students to focus on areas of interest. Honesty, compassion, and emphasis on the positive are hallmarks of the school's approach to life and learning.
The Yavneh curriculum surpasses current standards by going deeper and giving students more opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge in ways that are meaningful for them. Teachers co-teach in a dual language environment (Hebrew and English) and are constantly collaborating with each other, integrating subject matter, and adapting lessons to the students’ interests which yields a rich, diverse curriculum, and inspires students to achieve their full potential.
Our Alef (first grade) class sets the foundation for learning where students gain skill sets that will be built upon in future grades. The year focuses on social and emotional development while emphasizing problem-solving skills, reading, and math skills through a PBL lens.
Examples of previous projects are:
Children noticed some older kids chasing pigeons on the playground. The teacher turned it into a lesson on compassion, which included a demonstration with live pigeons from a local bird rescue organization.
Children designed and created their own city out of cardboard and recycled materials. It was team driven, with each child having a specific role such as designer, builder, thought leader.
Example of a collaborative project with other grades:
Yavneh had a court case - putting the Once-ler (from Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax) on trial for cutting down the trees. Each class participated in different aspects of the trial, which touched on many topics such as the environment, principles of law, and the history of Jewish values and relationship to the earth.
You are: creative, flexible, collaborative, responsive to the needs of children, a good listener, dynamic, caring, receptive, open, and bring your own amazing ideas to the team.
