The Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund (the Federation) supports a vision of diverse and dynamic Bay Area Jewish communities, deeply engaged in Jewish life and doing good locally, in Israel and around the world. A newly defined strategic direction positions the Federation to achieve this vision by mobilizing innovation, collaboration, and community investment with focus on three intersecting areas:
• Recruiting and stewarding the next generation of Jewish philanthropists to generate more and better philanthropy, driven by Jewish values;
• Collaborating with partners to build connection and belonging in order to dramatically increase the number of young people engaged in Jewish life; and
• Leading or funding core components that foster the resilience and security of Jewish communities, both locally and globally.
The Federation is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual with a variety of skill sets who wants to join a team working to build a new model of 21st century and next generation Federation engagement.
The Senior Program Officer, Resilience and East Bay (SPO) is a key member of the Community Impact team based in Berkeley, California, supporting impact strategies that drive towards achievement of the Federation’s vision and stewarding the next phase of integration of the former Jewish Federation of the East Bay into the fabric of the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund. This will include deepening relationships with professional and lay leaders of Jewish organizations, clergy, and community partners and elevating visibility for East Bay community needs to ensure full integration.
The SPO will play a key role in the Federation’s continued COVID and emergency response, contributing to the assessment of community needs Bay Area wide, strengthening relationships among community organizations within and across sectors, and developing and implementing new strategies in alignment with the Federation’s strategic priority to foster a resilient and engaged Jewish community. The SPO will also lead grantmaking in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion, with the goal of making progress towards more organizational environments where all people in the Jewish community, including Jews of Color, are thriving in Bay Area Jewish life.
The SPO will partner with colleagues on the Philanthropy and Development teams to maximize philanthropic investment in impact initiatives and support strong relationships with donors and funders, particularly in the East Bay. This SPO will also serve as a primary liaison between the East Bay and San Francisco offices to ensure coordination and smooth functioning. Areas of focus for this role may evolve over time, based on emerging needs of the community and as we achieve full integration of the East Bay into Federation programs and initiatives. Flexibility and openness to change will be key to long term success.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
• Lead next phase of integration of the East Bay Jewish community into the Federation network, including by deepening relationships with East Bay-based organization partners, strengthening community relations, elevating visibility for East Bay community needs, and ensuring full integration of the East Bay partners across Federation initiatives, grantmaking, and programs.
• Manage grantmaking from endowed restricted funds with designated purposes to support the East Bay Jewish community.
• Develop and implement integrated impact strategies for a next phase of COVID and emergency response Bay Area wide in alignment with the Federation’s strategic priority to foster a resilient and engaged Jewish community. This may include assessments of needs, convening partners, working with lay task forces or working groups, managing grants processes, and evaluating impact.
• Oversee the Federation’s growing portfolio of grants in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion. This may include stewarding relationships with grantees and cohorts, identifying new potential grantees leading in this area, implementing new grant opportunities, evaluating impact of pilots, advising on new strategies, and partnering with colleagues across the organization to further DEI goals, internally and externally.
• Collaborate with Philanthropy, Development and Marketing teams to communicate about impact in the SPO’s portfolio, support fundraising and maximize philanthropic investment.
• Serve as primary point of contact for East Bay office operations, and liaison between the East Bay and San Francisco offices, ensuring collaboration, clarity of communication and smooth functioning.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills, which might include work with boards, committees, funders and senior level community professionals.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments and disciplines.
• Excellent communicator verbally and in writing.
• Team player with a growth and learning mindset.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances and needs, ability to prioritize and juggle multiple demands.
• Familiarity with the East Bay Jewish communal landscape, and knowledge of/appreciation for the Jewish community, customs and practices is preferred.
• Knowledge and experience working to advance racial and ethnic diversity inside or outside of the Jewish community is preferred.
Education and Experience
• 8-10 years of successive leadership roles in non-profit or philanthropic organizations, including management of complex projects, grantmaking, and evaluation.
• Master’s Degree in a field of study such as Jewish communal service, public policy, non-profit management or a related field is preferred.
• Training in areas including facilitation, grantmaking, strategic planning and/or diversity, equity and inclusion is a plus.
