Congregation Beth Shalom is a traditional, egalitarian congregation in the Conservative movement. Our emphasis on kedushah, kehillah, and kavanah enriches the lives of our members, numbering 600 families, as well as the broader community. We offer vibrant lifelong Jewish learning and spiritual growth.

Our full-time Development Director will lead our congregation in developing plans and initiatives to ensure long-term financial health and sustainability. At the heart of any development program are strong relationships with constituents. We envision a two-step process of first, developing a strategic vision and second, implementing that vision. At the same time, the Development Director will steward current fundraising, donation and planned giving goals.

• Assist in implementing our strategic plan, with the primary goal of moving towards financial sustainability
• Support endowment fund growth through solicitation of donors
• Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors across all giving capacities
• Develop strong relationships with and among congregants and create points of entry to assist membership growth
• Create strong ties to the broader Jewish, Squirrel Hill, and Pittsburgh community
• Research, apply to, and maintain grants from the local to federal level
• Assess potential high net-worth donors using appropriate databases and publications
• Insure that donors receive timely and appropriate thanks and recognition
• Be visible to members, and attend synagogue and community functions
• Instill a culture of philanthropy in our members
• Attend related committee meetings
• Report goals outcomes to Board of Trustees quarterly and as needed
• Guide the Life and Learning planned giving program
• Oversee the annual gala fundraiser
• Recommend recognition programs for donors
• Develop creative new fundraising ideas
• Provide accurate information to the Controller for budgeting
• Develop relationships with outside organizations, including foundations and elected officials
• Keep up-to-date and accurate records of activities and member and donor profiles
• Coach encourage, and train others in the organization to aid in achieving goals
• Learn the local and regional Jewish community

• Work with the Executive Director and Executive Committee to develop 5- and 10-year development strategic plans
• Prepare and present the development strategic plan to the Executive Committee, Board of Trustees and the Congregation
• Begin to implement the plan
• Develop methodologies to assess benchmark goals

• Ability to multitask and prioritize shifting needs
• Work collaboratively with colleagues
• Analytical skills for donor and grant research
• Excellent interpersonal, writing, presentation, and listening skills
• Proven track record of achieving development and fundraising goals
• Ability to create compelling development materials and presentations and conversant with social media, web and paper platforms for distribution
• Knowledge of donor database programs or customer relationship management systems
• Have an understanding of Judaism, specifically Conservative Judaism
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in development in a not-for-profit environment or possess related skills
• Flexibility in hours and schedule to accommodate evening and weekend meetings and events
