Bethesda Jewish Congregation, www.bethesdajewish.org, seeks an organized and engaging Synagogue Administrator. BJC is a warm, inclusive, and diverse community located in suburban Maryland. We have been co-located with the Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church (BHPC) for over 50 years and engage with them and other interfaith partners to make a more just world. This is a great role for someone who seeks part-time (approximately 80% FTE) and flexible but very meaningful work, with the opportunity to operate remotely for a significant part of the week.
We are seeking an experienced professional interested and ready to oversee all administrative functions of the synagogue, partnering with the Rabbi, Program and Worship Coordinator (a new opening), Board of Directors, and member volunteers to support a warm and well-run congregation. The Synagogue Administrator will work independently but have a consultative approach to ensuring all administrative, accounting, and member communication functions operate effectively and in accordance with BJC’s strategic direction and budget.
The Administrator will be a front-line contact with the community and with other Jewish, cultural, and administrative-related organizations. Key responsibilities and tasks include:
Accounting and administration –
In consultation with the BJC treasurer and accountants, handle billing, receivables processing, event registration & tracking, payroll, donation acknowledgements and tracking, and general office management.
Membership engagement and communications –
Maintain and enhance functionality of Shul Cloud database, create and maintain uniform calendar of events across all platforms.
Answer telephone and email, forward pastoral care and other requests to the Rabbi when appropriate. Coordinate Yahrzeit and Mi Shebeirach notices, letters, and mailings with the Chesed Society.
Attend B’nai Mitzvah and congregational events as possible in order to get to know congregation and participate in congregational life
Represent BJC at key meetings –
Serve as BJC liaison with BHPC Sextons & Staff, attend weekly Building Users meetings, attend other committee meetings as needed in coordination with committee chairs and Rabbi.
Support Board operations –
Attend monthly BJC Board Meeting, prepare reports and documents.
Partner with Program and Worship Coordinator (new opening) –
Share responsibilities for Friday Shabbat attendance/setup with Coordinator (perhaps 1 Friday/month), help Coordinator develop and maintain a volunteer corps.
Supervise Coordinator and teacher-collective.
The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, administrative, interpersonal, and communication skills, particularly:
Basic competencies in financial management, budgeting and reporting, and internal controls.
Intermediate proficiency in MS Office and Shul Cloud or similar congregation-support software.
Self-motivated, ability to manage own time and drive efficiencies.
Demonstrated customer service orientation, preferably in a membership or volunteer setting.
Strong communicator, able to handle challenging and sensitive situations.
Highly organized and resourceful.
Minimum 5 years of administrative experience.
Proficiency in Jewish values, customs, and traditions.
Availability once a month for Shabbat/Friday evening services (once in-person services resume).

You will play a large role in helping to inspire and assist members in charting their own spiritual journeys within BJC and in the larger community.
