Director of Kesher Nevatim Preschool

The Kesher Center for Jewish Learning and Culture is a non-affiliated institution that serves the Cambridge, Somerville, and surrounding areas. Home to both the Kesher Nevatim Preschool and the Kesher After School programs, we are a diverse and welcoming community that provides progressive Jewish educational experiences for children preschool through middle school.

Kesher Nevatim is an inviting center of high-quality Jewish learning and Reggio-inspired education for children between 2 years 9 months and 5 years of age. Our program integrates the joys of Jewish life with an emergent curriculum centered around children’s interests and curiosities.

Position Description:

We are seeking a warm, dynamic and experienced educator to serve as Director of the Kesher Nevatim Preschool, beginning in late summer of 2020. The Director will supervise approximately 4 staff members and provide year-round programming for a classroom of approximately 18 children. Working closely with the Executive Director and After School Director, the Director will lead the preschool program and carry out an aligned vision that integrates educational philosophy and curriculum.

Primary Responsibilities include:

• Providing daily, on-site leadership of the program
• Hiring, mentoring, and supervising teachers and substitutes
• Working with teachers to advance our Reggio-inspired, play-based curriculum that is infused with Jewish content
• Utilizing knowledge of child development and education research to support the learning of all students
• Creating a supportive work environment that ensures staff feel connected to decision-making and invested in student learning
• Allotting time to teach in the classroom to stay engaged with the day-to-day operation of the program
• Actively working to promote an atmosphere of acceptance, inclusivity, and social justice on matters of race, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression in our classroom
• Communicating with current families directly and through regular newsletters and social media
• Leading efforts to organize community events for current families
• Managing the marketing, admissions, and retention of new students
• Overseeing budget and operational needs of the preschool program including tracking payroll, managing financial recordkeeping with our bookkeeper, coordinating fundraising, and managing tuition and billing through our tuition management company
• Collaborating with the Executive Director and After School Director on joint activities and communications
• Ensuring compliance with all licensing standards
• Representing Kesher Nevatim to the greater community


• B.A. in Early Childhood Education (M.A. preferred)
• Minimum of 3 years teaching in an Early Childhood Education setting
• Experience with administration and leadership in an Early Childhood Education program
• Experience with Jewish education (preferred)
• Massachusetts EEC Director I or Director II certification or equivalent (if licensed in another state)
• Rich understanding of guided play, Reggio Emilia philosophy, and emergent curriculum
• Expertise or willingness to learn about Jewish holidays and cultural values
• Commitment to creating a welcoming environment for diverse families and staff
• Exceptional organizational, management, communication, and supervisory skills
• Proficiency in current technology, including spreadsheet management, file sharing, and communications platforms
• Proven experience as a productive and collaborative team leader and contributing member
