The Director of Advancement is an administrative position, reports to the Head of School and sits on the school’s advancement team consisting of the development, admissions and marketing staff. The Director of Advancement is responsible for overseeing all development/advancement efforts at VBS Day School. The Director of Advancement works closely with school administrators, employees, Board of Trustees, and parents to meet the development needs of VBSDS.
-Create a development plan as a guiding document for all development efforts. This will include the development goals, maintaining an annual calendar of fundraising efforts and coordinating Day School fundraising events with the Synagogue master calendar.
-Collaborate with other Advancement professionals and lay leaders, including but not limited to Head of School, Director of Admissions/Marketing/Communications, Admissions Associate, VBS Director of Communications and VP of Advancement in order to determine advancement priorities and goals.
-Oversee the Development Committee. Work closely with the Head of School, Development Chair and Committee to set development goals and strategies and follow through on the targeted plan.
-Allot time and focus to create and implement a major gift cultivation strategy.
-Attend Board of Trustees meetings (when reporting to the Board) and -Parent Organization meetings to establish and maintain connections and working relationships with lay leaders and deepen familiarity with their interests.
-Take an active role in promoting a positive relationship between the School and the Synagogue as it pertains to development efforts. Work collegially with the Synagogue professional staff including the Executive Director, Development Coordinator and lay leaders as needed to coordinate strategy.
Network with other development directors in private schools/organizations.
-Participate in professional development workshops and professional associations as it pertains to development.
-Supervise Development Assistant together with Head of School.
ANNUAL FUND/SCHOOL FUNDS
-Establish and oversee the process for the Annual Fund campaign.
-Develop a timeline and marketing materials for the Annual Fund campaign.
-Plan and implement Generation’s Circle campaign.
-Responsible for fundraising efforts on Generation’s Day and overseeing various aspects of the day.
-Plan and implement Annual Fund Phone-A-Thon (or flexible Phone-a-Thon coordinated with lay leader schedules and availability).
-Provide training for the campaign chairs and volunteer solicitors.
-Create effective communication tools to make donors aware of fundraising priorities, opportunities and progress of donations received.
-Work with database/website coordinator to ensure maintenance of donor database and reports is accurate and updated at all times.
-Target and coordinate individual and group solicitations.
-Promote faculty and staff participation in fundraising efforts.
-Conclude the Annual Fund cycle by designing an Annual Report.
DAY SCHOOL GALA
-Identify, and solicit Gala honorees.
-Lead meetings with Gala chairs.
-Hire and supervise the Gala Consultant.
-Work with Head of School and VBS Executive Director on aspects of the Development Plan that pertain to Annual Fund and VIVA Gala.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
-The Advancement Director, along with the Head of School, will be the primary professionals partnering with Board members to advance the mission of the school.
-Design fall Board Retreat with Board Chair and Head of School.
-A bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5-7 years development, fundraising, and/or communications experience - preferably within a non-profit or independent school environment. A Master’s degree is preferred.
-Knowledge of and familiarity with the Jewish community of Los Angeles.
-Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to serve as an effective ambassador and advocate.
-Professional, confident demeanor to interact successfully with distinguished community members and philanthropic leaders.
-Networking ability to inspire and enlarge our supporter base.
-Ability to work both independently and as a member of the professional team.
-Strong database, spreadsheet skills and ability to make both quantitative and qualitative decisions.
-Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively.
-Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
-Experience with Raiser's Edge and/or Blackbaud preferred.
Salary commensurate with experience.
Successful completion of fingerprint clearance, TB screening and satisfactory reference check.
