Director of Youth Education & Engagement

An inclusive, innovative Conservative synagogue in San Diego seeks a new Director of Education to lead our Hebrew School. This position requires someone who will implement programs and curriculum in concert with our mission of Connecting Jews to Torah and to Each Other. We have a diverse congregation, and are looking for an educational leader who reflects and incorporates that diversity into our programming. Our ideal candidate is someone with Jewish education and administrative experience, who will bring their own vision to our school along with innovative ideas and a love of Judaism. This person will need to be collaborative with our rabbi, our VP Education, and our office administrator, and is someone who can encourage parent volunteerism. This person is responsible for managing teachers, developing curriculum and special services/events, cultivating student teachers from our post-b’nei mitzvah classes, and co-leading monthly Family Shabbat services. This is a part-time, salaried position. Position includes synagogue membership for the director and their family.

Overview of Position
Responsible, in collaboration with the Rabbi and the VP Education, for the oversight of youth programming and engagement, and the management and supervision of the Religious School and Hebrew Studies Programs from Kindergarten through Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Madrichim (teachers’ assistants) program. The school meets twice a week for 3 hours on Sunday mornings and 2 hours Wednesday afternoons, in addition to occasional Shabbat, holiday, and commemorative events. This part-time position includes the supervision of all Religious School staff, which includes teachers, madrichim, and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutor. This position also functions as the youth advisor, in support of the Kadima (4-6 grade) and USY teen program beyond Bar/Bat Mitzvah year.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Prioritize focus of Jewish learning on
o Hebrew reading for religious text; and
o Hebrew language/conversation;
o Jewish history and culture
• Ensure preparation of students for Bar/Bat Mitzvah
• Implement engaging, grade-level appropriate curriculum and review regularly for effectiveness
• Integrate holiday, cultural, and historic themes into weekly lessons
• Ensure students’ engagement in religious school programming of Jewish learning, culture, and community
• Organize Family Shabbats 1 Friday evening per month in coordination with Rabbi and songleader, and an annual Learner’s Shabbat 1 Saturday morning
• Organize and implement children’s high holiday services and other holiday events/programming

Youth Engagement Advisor
• Publicize and communicate youth programming and materials to Hebrew School and prospective families
• Oversee and advise student-directed Kadima (4-6 grade) and USY (7-12 grade) programming
• Act as liaison within San Diego Jewish and regional USY communities, and encourages youth participation in community events

Teacher and Madrichim Recruitment/Supervision
• Hire and train teachers and Madrichim (recent Bar/Bat mitzvah students who serve as teaching assistants and helpers)
• Lead regularly scheduled teacher meetings and staff development sessions
• Observe classes as needed and provide feedback to teachers

Planning and Leadership
• Act as a member of synagogue’s staff leadership team
• Work with Board of Trustees for planning and implementation of:
o Strategic planning to set vision and goals for each school year
o Replacement of classroom facilities
• Special events that involve students

Budget and Fiscal Responsibilities
• Work with Board VPs of Finance and Education to draft annual school budget
• Provides payroll input to bookkeeper for teachers’ hours
• Maintain student and staff attendance records
• Maintain expense register, ensuring fiscal responsibility
• Write monthly Board report and attends Board meetings

Ancillary Duties
• School publicity and student/family recruitment
* Attend and lead or delegate all Religious School events
• Manage registration and enrollment process
• Address and manage student behavior issues
• Communicate with parents and staff as needed, on student progress and other needs, via synagogue blog and other means
• Maintain Religious School closed Facebook group
• Implement and participate in development of emergency procedures and safety drills
• Recruit volunteers for safety shomrim (parent safety guards)
• Maintain learning materials and supplies
• Coordinate all Religious School programming
• Ensure that facilities are maintained and cleaned up after students’ use

Position Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Jewish Studies, or similar area, or equivalent work experience
• Minimum 5 years experience working with students in a Jewish religious school environment
• Budget experience
• Administrative experience
• Knowledge of Jewish History, Jewish Religious Practices, sacred scriptures and Israel
