Director of Youth Engagement

Temple Emanuel, a progressive Reform congregation with approximately 500 families near Washington D.C. in Kensington, Maryland, seeks a full-time Director of Youth Engagement (DYE) who can:
• maintain and expand upon our vibrant, close-knit community of teens and pre-teens
• establish meaningful relationships with synagogue youth of all ages
• develop and implement programs that are not only engaging and fun, but also cultivate Jewish values and a strong Jewish identity
• communicate effectively with teens and families
• work cooperatively with lay leaders and professional staff

Job Responsibilities of Director of Youth Engagement
Responsibilities for the DYE can be organized into 3 arenas: Youth group administration and programming, Temple-wide duties, and communications.

Youth group administration and programming, which includes activities such as:
o hosting monthly lounge nights
o planning and supervising Temple lock-ins and weekend events
o attending NFTY regional events
o scheduling Board meetings; developing teen leadership skills
o connecting teens to social service opportunities outside the Temple (such as the RAC’s L’Taken)
o supervising a part-time junior youth group leader who works with KESTY J (6th/7th graders) and KESTY 45 (4th/5th graders)

Temple-wide duties, which include:
o attending most monthly Board of Trustee and all Youth Committee meetings
o in conjunction with the clergy, organize three teen-led services during the year, including High Holiday services for young families.
o attending weekly professional staff meetings
o coordinating youth involvement in Temple-wide events, such as Purim carnival
o teaching and/or assisting in 8th grade upper school class
o creating and managing the Youth Program budget with help from the Youth Committee
o managing the religious school’s teen madrichim program on Sunday mornings

Communication duties, which include:
o maintaining all marketing for youth programs, including social media outlets, distribution lists, and other forms of communication
o submitting articles, pictures, and dates for upcoming events to Temple publications

Desired skills and traits
• Ability to connect with young Jews on a personal level and help them cultivate lasting friendships
• Strong communication and executive functioning skills
• Ability to develop and maintain a budget
• Ability to motivate, delegate, and oversee to completion all program tasks
• Able to work in teams
• Strong supervisory skills
• Available to work Sundays and some evenings during the school year
• Music skills a plus

Experience and qualifications
• BA or BS preferred
• Jewish educational background that includes a firm understanding of Jewish history, holidays, prayer, ritual practices and values
• Prior youth group programming leadership and/or camp counselor experience preferred
