Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy, an independent Jewish day school in suburban Philadelphia, seeks an experienced, dynamic and caring person to serve as an Upper School Director beginning September 2020. Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Director of Upper School oversees approximately 65 full- and part-time faculty members and 225 students in grades 9–12. The Director of the Upper School, along with other members of the senior administrative team, helps supervise the consistent operation of the school and oversees the success and wellness of upper school students by working closely with teachers, parents, and administration.
Interested candidates must be able to create an environment of respect and rapport while managing the routines and procedures for the upper school. The candidate must have the ability to collaborate with colleagues, develop student-centered relationships, and foster a growth mindset for each of our students. In addition, the candidate should seek and create opportunities for professional growth and learning through team meetings, professional development opportunities, and collaboration with Barrack educators.
The ideal candidate has energy and enthusiasm for upper school students and demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness while interacting with the many constituencies of the Barrack community. It is important that the Upper School Director is professional at all times, recognizing the integrity of each student, advocating for the needs of our students, and maintaining confidentiality while managing students’ needs.
The candidate must enjoy working with upper school students and lead with energy, enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic. Students and faculty are guided by the four values in our school’s Derech Eretz Honor Code: Honor/Kavod, Moral Courage/Ometz Lev, Kindness/Hesed, and Community/Kehillah.
Qualifications include but are not limited to:
A master’s degree with a strong background in school administration for students grades 9 through 12
A strong understanding of appropriate methods for meeting the needs of diverse learners
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills, with experience in effective communication with parents, students, teachers, and staff
Ability to function as a member of a team with administrators, teachers, students, and parents
Major duties and responsibilities include:
To act as the academic leader of the upper school, responsible for its day-to-day operation in close coordination with other members of the administrative team
To manage the school schedule and monitor student academic progress; coordinate the efforts of teachers and administrators for successful student outcomes
To provide for the academic and social emotional learning of upper school students
To coordinate activities, student clubs and publications, and assemblies for the upper school
To assist in the admissions process, guide prospective families, evaluate applicants for enrollment, and coordinate retention efforts with the Office of Enrollment Management
To support new teachers and to ensure that teachers are familiar with and adhere to school policies in all areas of the school operation
To support the school, the Head of School, and the Board of Directors as needed
To oversee department chairs and faculty, including creating professional development opportunities for faculty in conjunction with other administrators and teachers
To serve as the liaison for the Muss program, the trimester program for juniors in Israel
To encourage school spirit and community by attending athletic games, drama productions, and other events that are important in the life of the school
To serve as parent contact for issues related to the upper school
To oversee an effective accountability and discipline system in the upper school
