Cantor/Cantorial Soloist Position
Congregation L’Dor V’Dor
Oyster Bay, New York

The Cantor/Cantorial Soloist will be an integral part of our warm and welcoming congregation and will be crucial in supporting our community and tending to our congregants’ spiritual needs.  Along with the Rabbi, the Cantor/Cantorial Soloist will help to lead Shabbat and holiday services where music and song are crucial to our vision.  As a Reform congregation we value innovation balanced with tradition.  As a teacher the Cantor/Cantorial Soloist will take the lead training bnai mitzvah students and bringing music and song to the Religious School.  There are many opportunities for creativity, whether it is through organizing concerts for the community or writing new prayer services.  The job description would lean into the new team member’s strengths but would include the following.

Pulpit Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the rabbi in creating and leading uplifting and meaningful prayer services
  • Holiday and festival prayer services
  • Adult prayer services as well as family/children services
  • Torah reading and/or supervision on specific holidays
  • Participate in life cycle events of congregants when needed
  • Share in pastoral duties if needed

Bnai Mitzvah Program

  • Willingness and ability to assume full responsibility of preparing and teaching bnai mitzvah students, including preparing them to chant prayers, Torah and Haftarah readings
  • Coordinate with Religious School principal and teachers to make sure younger students are learning enough Hebrew prayers in anticipation of their bnai mitzvah

Musical Program

  • Supervise and direct musical programs, including musical selections for prayers, recruitment and supervision of adult and junior choir, teaching music and prayer in religious school
  • Hire and coordinate accompanists and other musicians
  • Mentor synagogue members interested in singing and playing for congregation
  • Encourage participation of congregants in singing at prayer services
  • Create musical events, such as concerts, for congregation
  • Being comfortable in different musical styles
  • Playing a musical instrument is a welcome plus

Education and Religious School Responsibilities

  • Willingness and ability to teach a variety of ages and interest groups
  • This might include: adult education classes, young Nursery School age programs, Religious School classes and adult bnai mitzvah program

Synagogue Leadership and Administration

  • Work within an established budget
  • Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings
  • Participate in a variety of community events and help to represent the congregation in the larger community
  • Along with the rabbi help to manage the technology for services, including sound system and livestreaming
  • Attend professional conventions
  • Other programs and events as necessary

Our compensation package is comprehensive and competitive. We will offer our Cantor/Cantorial Soloist a salary of $100 to $130K with a generous benefit package that includes four weeks of vacation.

Knowledge of Torah and Haftarah trope and familiarity with Jewish prayer traditions are required.
