Controller / Senior Director, Accounting

Mem Global seeks an experienced Controller to lead all day-to-day finance operations including accounting, accounts payable, payroll entries, and managing the team performing these functions. The Controller ensures that Mem Global has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits.   

The Controller works closely with program leaders and their staff, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures, but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations. Additionally, the Controller partners with VP, Finance to champion the automation of process flows throughout the organization with staff training and systems integrations

Who You Are and What You'll Do:

  • You have deep knowledge of nonprofit business operations, with specific focus on finance and accounting processes.
  • You will provide finance and accounting leadership through:  
    • Accounting:
      • Oversee all aspects of organization’s day-to-day general accounting operations functions and assure the accurate and timely recording of all transactions in compliance with GAAP.  
      • Assure timely and accurate completion of month-end close and financial statement preparation in accordance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards.
      • Prepare and/or review reconciliations, draft financial statements, analyzing balances and budget-to-actual variances.
      • Oversee payable cycle including monthly rent and reimbursement close-out and weekly vendor bill payout.
      • Continually monitor internal financial controls and cash handling procedures within the finance department to ensure compliance with internal policy, with an eye toward strengthening internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, program budgets, and expenditures. 
      • Partner with the DevOps team and Program Leadership to ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period. Assemble financial reporting materials for grants. 
      • Assist with financial reporting and analysis to meet organizational needs including internal and external GAAP reporting, cash flow reporting and projection, and IRS form 990 and other required tax filings. 
      • Work with the VP, Finance, in establishing and maintaining working relationships with banks and other financial institutions to ensure effective business and banking collaboration. 
    • Budgeting:
      • Support annual budgeting and periodic forecasting for the organization, including preparing schedules and other reports.
      • Participate in budget to actual department reviews. Provide financial training to budget owners to assist them in the preparation and review of their budgets. 
      • Design, implement and direct systems to manage budgets and control expenditures.  
    • Management / Direct Supervisory:
      • Supervise, lead, guide, coach, and mentor direct reports on accounts payable team. Leverage strengths of the current finance team and outsourced accounting teams.
      • Manage staffing levels and workload assignments to ensure there is sufficient knowledge and cross-training to accomplish goals, including training and succession planning as needed. 
      • Collaborate with other department leaders to align financial strategies with overall organizational goals. 
  • You have Bachelor’s degree, preferably in accounting or finance-related field, and have minimum of 7-10 years of all facets of nonprofit accounting and finance experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by increasing responsibility through experience in gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders. CPA and public accounting experience preferred. 
  • You have a minimum of 3 years full management experience, including: building, leading, and developing a team of full-time finance professionals, performance management, coaching and retention.
  • You have significant experience coordinating audit activities and managing financial reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, account reconciliations, and consolidations, in a corporate structure with multiple entities in multiple currencies. 
  • You have meaningful understanding of or successful track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of individual and foundation grants. 
  • You have experience in multi-currency and multi-entity consolidations. Specific experience currencies within Europe preferred. 
  • You are technologically savvy, with experience in a high-growth environment, where you developed accounting processes, selected and oversaw software installations, and managed relationships with software vendors. 
  • You have advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software, and strong skills in learning and quickly adapting to new cloud-based platforms and applications. Significant experience with Sage IntacctSalesforce CRM, Bill, Ramp, or equivalent required. 
  • You have keen analytic and problem-solving skills, which allow for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting. 
  • You have strong interpersonal and communication skills, with experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board members or other outside partners. 
  • You have the ability to translate and communicate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels of the organization.

The Fine Print:

The Controller / Senior Director, Accounting position, reports into the VP, Finance, and is based in one of our hub office locations in either Chicago, IL (preferred), Washington, D.C. (preferred), NYC, Encinitas, CA, or Charlotte, NC.  

At our hub office locations, our team works a hybrid schedule, where employees can choose to work remotely 2 days per week and collaborate in-person with coworkers the rest of the week.

How Mem Global Pays You:

Mem Global’s starting salary ranges are based on education, experience, location, and skillset required for each role. If you have more experience and/or are targeting a different salary range, let's talk!

  • The starting salary range for this full-time exempt position is:
    • NYC or Washington D.C.: $125,000 - $135,000
    • Chicago or Encinitas: $115,000 - $125,000
    • Charlotte, NC: $105,000 - $115,000
  • Annual merit-based salary increases.
