UNIT LEADER - JOB DESCRIPTION

The Unit Leader provides direct support and supervision to the general counselor staff and campers. They are available to assist and aid their staff

in all ways and ensure that the counselors have all the tools needed to perform their jobs. The primary responsibility of a UL is to be

a general resource for campers, staff members, and parents on organization, personnel, programming, and camper-related matters.

Unit Leaders are supervisors, facilitators, evaluators, and communicators.

  • Reports directly to a Division Director.
  • Serves as a positive role model to all staff members and campers.
  • Meets with counselors daily to discuss items of importance.
  • Participate in pre-camp meetings, orientations, and weekly and daily Leadership meetings.
  • Keep copies of all schedules, group lists, alpha lists, specialist lists to check on activities starting and ending promptly, knowing where every staff member is at all times, making sure at least two counselors are at each activity, making sure counselors are participating in activities, adjusting and placing campers not attending regular scheduled activities, making sure counselors are participating in activities, maintaining staff break approvals.
  • Evaluate, supervise, discipline, and train all staff members under his/her direct supervision.
  • Collect lesson plans from staff for any “bunk time” periods. Advise counselors as to proper clothing for campers.
  • Be sure that no counselor is excused from swimming and is assisting the swim staff.
  • Assist counselors in getting groups to Boker Tov, Ma’Ariv, and all other activities.
  • Maintain a personal record of every camper’s adjustment to camp life. Supervise parent requests and keep the Division Director informed about all communications.
  • Supervise proper decorum and table manners among campers and counselors in the lunch area.
  • Provide resource & assistance to counselors regarding camper adjustment problems, parent communications, staff/personnel issues, & programming matters.
  • Responsible for your counselors getting their campers' projects home.
  • Approve/advise counselor-driven programming areas. Be prepared to offer suggestions for rainy day, hot day and/or other special day programming.
  • Assist in enforcing camp’s written policies on strangers and intruders as found in the staff manual.
  • Assist with all-camp activities, such as lunch, snack, and camper arrival and dismissal.
  • Communicate with parents regularly.
  • Track and monitor staff member attendance.
  • Train all staff to accept, respect, and be responsible to the multi-cultural diversity of our society
  • Provide appropriate supervision before and after camp hours.
  • Provide team-building activities or staff training to counselors during the summer if necessary.
  • Meet with senior counselors daily.
  • Attend appropriate unit camp trips, overnights, or late stays. Assist in overseeing special events.
  • Train staff regarding trips – to assess potential hazards, enforce safety regulations, provide necessary instruction, and handle potential emergencies
  • Attend all special evening camp programs, events, and meetings.
  • Provide written mid-summer and end-of-season evaluations of all unit counselors.
  • Assist in packing supplies and cleaning areas for end of season clean up and shutdown.
  • Meet with Camp Director after season ends to discuss and evaluate the season and provide suggestions for the future.
  • Other appropriate tasks, as needed by the camp director.
  • Support the vision and mission of the JCC and serve as a role model for campers and staff.

Experience
- Previous experience in early childhood education, childcare, or tutoring is preferred
- Certification in first aid/CPR is a plus, but not required
- Experience working with children in various settings such as classrooms, sports coaching, or special education is beneficial
- Ability to educate and engage children in a camp setting

Job Types: Full-time Seasonal

Expected hours: 40 per week
