REPORTS TO: Regional Director

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervise Associate and Assistant Regional Director(s)

LOCATION: Washington, D.C.

Grade/Class: Grade H, Exempt, PSA-Eligible

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

 

As a key member of the DC Region’s Senior Leadership Team in one of ADL’s largest and most active regions in the country, the Deputy Regional Director will oversee ADL DC’s team responsible for carrying out all regional operations in the region’s four states (DC, MD, VA and NC).  This includes ADL programming, communications, incident response, advocacy, coalition building, community engagement, and other operational activities.  The Deputy Regional Director supervises the region’s Associate and Assistant Regional Director(s) and coordinates with all ADL departments.  The Deputy Regional Director represents and may serve as the public face of ADL DC, such as speaking engagements, coalition meetings, with volunteer leaders and donors, and in media, and on internal ADL national working groups and other leadership committees.

Responsibilities

Primary:

  • Leadership
    • Supervise the DC Regional Operations team responsible for developing and carrying out ADL programming, communications, incident response, advocacy, coalition building, community engagement, and other operational activities in the region.
    • Guide and mentor team members set goals, develop and carryout strategies and plans, and grow professionally by sharing experience of effective strategies and problem-solving approaches to ensure quarterly and annual goals are achieved.
    • Serve as an active and collaborative member of the ADL DC senior leadership team.
  • Office Management
    • Partner with the Regional Director to oversee the day-to-day operations of the DC Regional Office.
    • Ensure the smooth functioning of the regional office in the absence of the Regional Director. Assist in budget preparation and general office management.
  • Innovation, Programming, and Profile Elevation
    • Help develop a culture in the region that encourages and rewards innovation to achieve ADL’s mission in DC region.
    • Work with team members to develop and execute an aggressive strategy to elevate ADL’s profile and reach in key markets as outlined in the ADL DC Onward Strategic Plan and tailoring them to local community needs and issues.
    • Develop strategies that successfully position ADL DC and our team members as experts and thought leaders.
    • Develop and implement community outreach, such as new initiatives and joint ventures with elected leaders and diverse interfaith and cross-cultural organizations active within the region e.g. African American, Hispanic and Latino groups, and faith leaders.
    • Work with the regional operations staff to develop and implement strategies that define ADL’s role and presence throughout the region, including the recruitment and cultivation of volunteer leaders, in-market programming, and the development and achievement of impact goals.
  • Represent ADL DC
    • Represent and serve as the public face of ADL DC in a variety of public forums to promote awareness of ADL’s mission.
    • As needed, represent ADL DC with public and elected officials and other dignitaries and community leaders.
    • As needed, respond to inquiries from the press and from members of the public, demonstrating authoritative knowledge of ADL’s policies and positions and relevant local, national and world events. Read, monitor, and respond to media reports and opinion
    • Travel as necessary within the region.

Secondary:

  • Respond to and resolve the most complex or sensitive complaints of discrimination, antisemitism, incidents, and other civil rights issues.
  • Manage, or work with team members to manage, regional volunteer engagement committees.
  • Participate and contribute to ADL’s Culture of Philanthropy across departments and regional operations.

Qualifications

Skills:

  • High degree of tact and discretion
  • Proven diplomatic and conflict resolution skills are required.
  • Excellent administrative, organizational and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Proven ability to work with and influence a wide variety of people.
  • Strong management and people development skills.
  • Strong public speaking and writing skills are required.
  • Ability to multi-task is essential. Basic computer skills are necessary.

Work Experience: 

  • Between seven to ten years of progressively responsible human relations or community service experience required
  • Significant program and operational management experience needed

Education: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree plus additional related college courses, professional training or equivalent experience required.

Work Environment: 

  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends when necessary to monitor incident response, represent ADL, and to attend community events. Some travel within the region is required. Occasional overnight travel is required.
  • ADL is a hybrid environment; this role requires 3 days a week in the office.

Compensation: 

  • This position has a salary range of $105,000 to $129,000. This salary range is reflective of a position based in Washington, D.C.. Please note that actual salaries are commensurate with experience and reflect the budget for a given position, and since ADL has a location-based compensation structure, there may be a different range for candidates in other locations. For an overview of our total rewards package, please visit https://www.adl.org/about/careers.
