SUMMARY
Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York is the oldest Reform synagogue in New York City, grounded in a rich history of Jewish communal leadership in the city and beyond. In 2025, the synagogue is celebrating its 180th anniversary. Our congregation is dynamic and forward-looking. As our current membership of 2,400 families grows, we remain committed to ensuring that new and current members alike, as well as non-members who connect with us in various ways, have high-quality and meaningful experiences in all aspects of synagogue life.
The Member Experience Manager reports to the Assistant Director of Membership and provides exceptional programmatic support. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of current trends in volunteering and community engagement and is passionate about helping members discover a wide range of opportunities to connect with and contribute to their community. This person will be a member of the temple’s Engagement Team and the High Holy Day team.
The position’s working hours are normally 9 AM to 5 PM Monday-Friday. As part of the responsibilities of this role, we want to make you aware that there will be times when you will be required to work some evenings, weekends, Shabbats, and holidays. As the Member Experience Manager, your contributions are vital to the success of the temple, and we appreciate your willingness to be available during these times when necessary.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Member Services / Engagement
- Provide high levels of internal and external customer service to members and the wider temple community
- Create and manage an onboarding system that effectively welcomes and engages both new and prospective members, initiating a seamless and inviting experience
- Partner with other departments to design retention initiatives tailored to members in transitional life stages—such as graduating from the Nursery / Religious Schools, moving beyond the Young Professional phase, becoming empty nesters, navigating retirement, or adjusting to the loss of a partner/spouse— providing continued engagement and support through these transitions
- Enhance volunteer and member engagement by creating meaningful recognition programs that celebrate the contributions of these groups to the community
- Staff some special and regular Friday evening Shabbat services, lifecycle services, and other events (which may occur during the evening or on weekends)
Administrative and Project Support
- Build impactful relationships with key lay leaders and engage participants to inspire, cultivate, and recruit the next generation of passionate program leaders
- Ensure smooth operations and impactful participation for member engagement and volunteer programs, including various age and stage groups and our thriving Tikkun Olam program
- Be part of a team working to plan and execute a wide array of member programs
- Collaborate with our Marketing and Communications Team to effectively showcase our offerings in a compelling and engaging manner
High Holy Day Preparations
- Collaborate with the High Holy Day team in preparation for and throughout the High Holy Days
- Support large-scale member outreach efforts and provide exceptional customer support to ensure all members receive their High Holy Day tickets in a timely and efficient manner

QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate for this position will possess or exhibit the following qualifications:
- 4+ years of volunteer development, membership, programming, or other related work experience
- Strong interpersonal skills - ability to build relationships and interact effectively with a diverse group of staff, clergy and community members
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Professional work style, ability to represent the temple in public-facing roles
- Able to work independently and on a team, managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Self-motivated, thinks ahead, and takes initiative on projects
- Superior attention to detail and accuracy, highly developed organizational skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and/or Salesforce
- Enthusiasm for working in a historic Jewish congregation undergoing meaningful and exciting growth and change; understanding of/experience with Reform Jewish life a plus
