Assistant Rabbi – Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue, Charleston SC

Mission: To assist the Rabbi and Synagogue lay leadership in providing for the spiritual needs of BSBI’s diverse membership, fostering growth in the congregation, and conducting outreach in the greater Charleston Jewish community.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Give Torah classes along with providing opportunities for study with individuals and small groups
  • Cultivate relationships with members of the shul as well as the greater Jewish community, with an eye on outreach and inspiring spiritual growth and connection
  • Assist the Rabbi and lay leadership in developing and implementing family and childrens’ programming for the shul and its community
  • Intensive Torah study will be an essential part of the day.  There is some flexibility as to when this ‘seder’ of learning will take place, with the ideal being at least three hours daily, five days a week
  • Create a variety of Jewish experiences, including (but not limited to) an array of classes, cohort experiences, Shabbos and Holiday gatherings
  • Host community members and guests in your home for Shabbos and Yom Tov meals and experiences
  • Cultivate connections and relationships with college students at the local College of Charleston and The Citadel

(Additional opportunities for qualified candidates include serving as a ba’al k’riah, working in hashgacha for the synagogue along with the local Va’ad Hakashrus, and extra focus on programs and initiatives for college outreach.)

 

Qualifications:

Rabbinic ordination preferred

Bachelor’s degree

Experience in formal or informal Jewish education

Strong interpersonal and communication skills 

An experiential teacher who is relatable, engaging, and able to connect with Jews from diverse backgrounds

A collaborative, team player open to new ideas and creative programming

Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue (BSBI) is proud to be the oldest Ashkenazi Orthodox Synagogue in continuous existence in the United States. The shul has staunchly upheld Orthodox Judaism since its beginnings 170 years ago, and simultaneously warmly welcomes all Jews of varying personal levels of religious observance and backgrounds. 

The shul has daily minyanim every morning and evening.   In addition to the main Synagogue in historic downtown Charleston, Shabbos and Yom Tov services are also held at the Minyan House in the beautiful South Windermere neighborhood. 

Synagogue events include a variety of Torah classes, breakfasts, special Shabbos and Yom Tov events and other social programming.  BSBI  is known far and wide for its warmth and welcoming atmosphere to both locals and frequent out-of-town visitors.
