Description

Beth Shalom Synagogue, the home for Conservative Judaism in Columbia, SC, seeks a dynamic, intellectual and engaging full time Rabbi to lead our historic synagogue. We seek a Rabbi to help our congregation celebrate Judasim with a nod to the past and an eye toward the future. The ideal candidate leads engaging services, sermons and holidays that appeal to all ages. Since 1907, Conservative Jews have been worshiping in South Carolina's capital city, and Beth Shalom has evolved and grown with the Jewish population here. Many of our more than 250 congregants are second, third and fourth generation members. Despite our deep family ties, we would like a Rabbi who proposes new ideas and creative ways we can share the beauty of egalitarian, Conservative Judaism. Within our congregation you will find members in interfaith marriages and from all racial, socio economic, and ethnic backgrounds. Our Director of Education was awarded the prestigoius Covenant Award and leads our thriving Religious School. We also have support staff to handle administrative and programming needs, and a part time baker who helps prepare delicious meals.

We are eager to welcome a Rabbi who would like to be a big fish in a small pond. What is not small, is the depth and breadth of the Jewish footprint in Columbia. Our mid-size city is home to the Anne Frank House, a Jewish Historical Society, an annual Jewish Film Festival, two Jewish Food Festivals, one of the earliest BBYO chapters in the country, Hillel on the campus of USC, and an award winning Jewish Day School. We have excellent relationships with local and state government, law enforcement, university presidents and churches. We are an intellectual congregation where many of our members are scholars from the University of South Carolina. Overall, Beth Shalom is a vibrant and active part of Columbia. If you seek a warm and welcoming congregation, we would be pleased to review your application.
