Jewish Education Specialist

Adas Israel Congregation, a Conservative synagogue in the heart of Washington, D.C. serving over 1700 families, is hiring multiple positions in the Education Department for the 2024-2025 school year, including full-time, part-time, and hourly teaching positions. The Education Department at Adas Israel is proud to serve our diverse family community from birth through college. We are home to a number of different school experiences, programs, Shabbat and holiday services, family learning, and youth groups to encourage our children and their grownups to engage in meaningful, communal experiences throughout the course of the year. The Estelle and Melvin Gelman Religious School, our Hebrew Department, and L'ayla, our learning experience for middle and high school students, are integral parts of the congregation, serving over 500 students.

The Jewish Education Specialist is a full-time, on-site position that reports to the Director of Schools, K-12 in cooperation with the Director of Youth and Family Programming and with the Rabbi who serves as the Director of Youth and Family Education. This position requires working outside of standard business hours, including Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. The ideal candidate is deeply immersed in and committed to Jewish learning, and brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and excitement to their work.  

Core Responsibilities: 

  • Supporting hourly teaching staff, student support specialists, and lead teachers with lesson planning, professional development, classroom management, and other educational needs
  • Curriculum review, development, and implementation across our four core subject areas: Judaics, Hebrew, Tefillah, and Parsha
  • Coordinating tefillah experiences and school-wide programming for holidays
  • Leading support for students requiring accommodations, including coordination IEP, 504, and other processes and supervising student support specialists
  • Communicating with students, families, parents, and teachers
  • Connecting with colleagues and other local institutions and organizations
  • Teaching in the supplemental school programs 
  • Serving as on-site administrative lead for our Saturday morning religious school program 
  • Ensuring staffing needs are met week to week including recruiting substitute teachers as needed
  • Depending on expertise and departmental staffing needs, the portfolio may also include:
    • Staffing the December teen Israel trip
    • Taking a lead role in class placements
    • Managing inventory and ordering of educational materials

A Successful Candidate Will Have These Qualifications:

  • Three to five years of relevant work experience. Masters in Education, Special Education, or Jewish Education a plus. 
  • Previous experience teaching in Jewish supplemental schools and working in informal Jewish education settings
  • Expertise with and interest in tefillah-based Hebrew and experiences, with the ability to train other educators in these modalities  
  • Ability to lead Shacharit, Mincha, and Maariv services in a Conservative setting 
  • Proven success teaching in grades K-6
  • Song leading experience is a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven success designing educational accommodations for neurodiverse students, students with disabilities, and students with all levels of social-emotional needs. 
  • Facility with Google Drive, Microsoft Office, and other workplace software

Compensation

  • Salary range: $50,000 - $55,000, commensurate with experience and expertise. Additional funds for this position may be available subject to taking on additional portfolio pieces within the education department.
