Temple Emanuel www.templeemanuel.com  an egalitarian congregation with over 1,500 member units affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism is looking for a Director of Development to join our senior team.  The successful candidate will be an effective relationship builder and will be skillful at engaging our congregants around meaningful philanthropic opportunities.

Job Summary:

The Director of Development will serve as a key member of the leadership team, creating and implementing a development strategy to support the successful implementation of our five-year strategic plan. The Director will identify philanthropic opportunities and oversee funding for initiatives that align with our immediate and long-term planning needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for a robust development program.
  • Create and implement a comprehensive development strategy including annual appeal; major gift opportunities; Legacy giving; multi-year gifts; donor stewardship; etc.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, Clergy, other professional colleagues, and lay leaders to determine annual and multi-year fundraising goals.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with major donors.
  • Work with lay leaders to coordinate and innovate our annual appeal efforts.
  • Grow the pipeline of donors by developing strategies to identify, cultivate, and solicit new prospects. Use donor research tools and community outreach to expand our supporter base.
  • Provide Clergy, Senior Staff, and Lay Leaders with the tools and background to solicit major gifts.
  • Develop new ways to engage the Temple Emanuel community in opportunities for giving.
  • Coordinate opportunities to celebrate significant milestones and anniversaries, including rededicating the TE building, etc. 
  • Identify new grant opportunities and funding sources.
  • Work in partnership with marketing and program staff to design and update fundraising collateral.
  • Ensure fundraising messages and program sponsorships are incorporated across all relevant channels.
  • Provide lay leadership (Executive Committee and Board of Directors) with development updates, reporting on fundraising progress and financial targets.
  • Attend evening and weekend events and engage in local travel to meet with donors and participate in community outreach to support Temple Emanuel’s mission.
  • Serve as a member of the senior team, contributing to the collaborative spirit fostered at Temple Emanue

Qualifications:

  • BA or BS required.
  • Significant experience in development and fundraising with the ability to design and implement an effective development strategy.
  • Proven track record of major gift development and increasing philanthropic revenue.
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating and stewarding new and existing donors.
  • Ability to write compelling cases for giving.
  • Knowledge of endowment and fund management is a plus.
  • Knowledge of individual, annual, digital, and event-driven giving.
  • Knowledge of development research tools and search engines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility, passion, and the ability to work with a diverse congregation.

The position will be in-person with some flexibility to work remotely.
