Congregation Beth Ahabah is a vibrant, growing, welcoming congregation with a 235 year history in the hip, historic cultural center of Richmond. Beth Ahabah is seeking a welcoming and knowledgeable Jewish Education Coordinator to administer our growing Religious School and adult educational programming. They will foster a love for Jewish learning, tradition, and community, using strong organizational and communication skills, and working with the executive staff team.
This is a full-time position responsible for general operation of our Religious School, implementing the curriculum developed by our Senior Rabbi, hiring and supervising teachers, and planning special programs. Responsibilities also include coordinating adult educational programs and opportunities, working with the Cantor to schedule B’nei Mitzvah as well as tutor students in the B’nei Mitzvah program, and other duties as required which support education at Beth Ahabah.
This is a new position, and the executive staff will work with the Coordinator to ensure a smooth transition into the new leadership structure.
Key Responsibilities
Religious School
- Ensure a meaningful, engaging, and age-appropriate Jewish educational experience in all our programming.
- Administer the Sunday Religious School program for grades Pre-K through 7, which is on Sunday mornings from 9:15-11:45 AM. The schedule includes a T’filah Workshop at the end of the morning.
- Administer the Monday Beit Midrash program for grades 8-10, which is on Monday nights from 5:45pm-8:40pm, including dinner and two class offerings. Some classes are for teens only, and some are combined with the Beit Midrash educational programming for adults.
- Hire and manage teachers; provide guidance, support, and professional development to ensure the highest standard of education; manage teacher attendance and payroll; arrange substitute teachers; prepare and gather classroom supplies for teachers and special programs.
- Manage student enrollment in Shulcloud, track student attendance, support school discipline policy as guided by Senior Rabbi, and promote the safety of students and staff.
- Supervise weekly tzedakah collection, counting, and distribution.
- Implement the Religious School curriculum in consultation with the Senior Rabbi.
- Assist Rabbi and Cantor with the T’filah Workshop at the end of the Sunday morning program.
- Work with Youth Coordinator to organize post-B’nei Mitzvah Madrichim leadership program. The robust Madrichim (teen leaders) program assists teachers in the classroom.
- Manage the Hebrew Coordinator, who creates Hebrew enrichment opportunities for Sunday Religious School classes.
- Manage Religious School budget and reimbursements.
Adult Education / Lifelong Learning
- Administer the Monday Beit Midrash program for adults.
- Hire and manage teachers, providing guidance, support, and professional development to ensure the highest standard of education.
- Help the clergy implement the curriculum for Monday night Beit Midrash programming which supports intergenerational adult and teen learning.
- Implement other educational opportunities for the congregation as needed.
B’nei Mitzvah Program
- Schedule the B’nei Mitzvah services in coordination with the Cantor and Director of Operations.
- Tutor B’nei Mitzvah students as needed, reporting to the Cantor.
- Periodic Shabbat service attendance on Fridays and/or Saturdays, coordinated by the Director of Operations to ensure staff coverage at B’nei Mitzvah Shabbat services.
Communications
- Participate in planning meetings as needed to coordinate the educational calendar.
- Send weekly communications to teachers and madrichim, and supervise teachers’ weekly or biweekly emails to parents.
- Coordinate educational publicity with staff and Marketing Specialist in the e-news, fliers, website, and other forms of communication to our members and the wider community.
Desired Experience & Qualifications:
- A strong background in Jewish education, with a deep knowledge of Jewish tradition, holidays, and customs.
- Experience in teacher management and program coordination.
- Ability to work effectively with children, teens, and families in a synagogue or educational setting.
- A minimum of 3-5 years of experience with Jewish education.
- Experience managing challenges and conflicts in a way that fosters growth and maintains positive relationships with students and adults.
Hours:
- This position includes weekend and evening hours. Designated weekday off to be coordinated with Director of Operations.
- Arrive on Sundays during the school year at 7:00 AM and remain until the end of Sunday Religious School programming (varies week to week, depending on after-school programming or tutoring).
- Work at Friday Shabbat Services and/or Saturday B’nei Mitzvah services as requested, between 15-30 Fridays (5:45-7:45pm) and/or Saturdays (10am-12pm or 5pm-7pm).
Salary Range: $40,000 - $50,000
Start Date preferably June 1, 2025
