THE ORGANIZATION

The Jewish Philanthropies of Southern Arizona (JPSA), housing Southern Arizona’s Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation, is an innovative, mission-driven non-profit organization dedicated to building, supporting, enhancing and sustaining a vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive Jewish community. Partnering with more than thirty local, national, and international partners, JPSA articulates a clear vision for Jewish life and brings together resources of all kinds in pursuit of that vision. The ideal candidate for this new position is a successful collaborator and change agent, departmental and organizational leader, and a highly skilled manager, comfortable with navigating a fluid and dynamic environment.

THE LOCATION

Tucson is known for the stunning natural beauty of our Sonoran Desert that provides breathtaking views, endless outdoor recreational opportunities, and a sunny, warm climate year-round. We are a thriving metropolis, home to world-renowned industry and education, with a small-town feel. Tucson offers affordable living, excellent schools, and a rich food, arts, and culture scene. Tucson’s Jewish community has a population of approximately 30,000 with the organizational and physical resources of a community three times our size. Jewish Philanthropies of Southern Arizona is at the center of this vibrant community.

THE POSITION

  • Working with the Chief Executive Officer, professional colleagues across the organization, and volunteer leadership, the Chief Impact Officer (CIO) sits on the Leadership Team (LT) and is the senior executive responsible for leading the effort to achieve strategic and programmatic community outcomes for Jewish Philanthropies of Southern Arizona and the broader Southern Arizona Jewish community.
  • The CIO will lead a team of approximately five professionals in all areas of community impact, leadership and engagement, including community-wide planning (currently the Ecosystem), granting and allocations, partner-organization resilience, relationships with JPSA partners, Jewish leadership, Jewish education and engagement, and Israel education and engagement.
  • As a member of JPSA’s Leadership Team (LT), the CIO will play an instrumental role in furthering organizational culture and engagement. Through individual, peer, and team leadership, the CIO, along with LT, will foster an environment of collaboration, curiosity, and innovation. This position will provide guidance and leadership that will enhance outcomes through talent development and mentorship.
  • The CIO is responsible for leading participatory processes and ongoing engagement of key stakeholders to create community strategies with clear vision, intended impact, goals and implementation plans for achieving significant change in targeted areas. The CIO must lead a dynamic and proactive department in ensuring the accomplishment of JPSA and community initiatives at a meaningful pace.
  • The CIO will play a critical role in strengthening JPSA’s presence and impact in Southern Arizona by serving as a key resource and thought leader within the community with both local and national organizations. The CIO will build trusting and collaborative relationships and strengthen the overall communal Ecosystem through genuine, visible, and transparent engagement with all agency stakeholders and community partners.
  • In partnership with Federation’s Financial Resource Development (FRD), Marketing & Communications, Public Affairs, and Executive departments, the CIO will be responsible for conceiving and implementing opportunities to connect donors to their impact, including site visits, innovative and collaborative grant making programs, and other community convenings.
  • The CIO will both be planful and flexible, and will facilitate work by various modes including strategizing, creating, elevating, implementing, and pivoting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

  • Create, implement, and oversee the effectiveness of all components of the Community Impact, Leadership & Engagement department.
  • Manage the Community Impact, Leadership & Engagement department professional team, with a focus on creating a collaborative, outcome-focused, and healthy work environment. Implement department meetings, develop systems for communication and collaboration cross-functionally with other JPSA teams, and mentor team members for future growth and leadership.
  • Oversee and manage the department budget, including the development of multi-year projections to quantify impact needs, multi-year projects, and to drive fundraising targets.
  • Create, oversee and implement grants and allocations methodology, strategy, and process with Community Impact Manager, Leadership Team, and the CEO.
  • Serve as a key member of LT and partner with teammates to achieve JPSA’s overall vision, mission, and goals, and foster a culture that makes JPSA a workplace of choice.
  • Partner with the Financial Resource Development (FRD) department on strategies to increase support for strategic priorities from local, national, and international foundations, and create reporting mechanisms to showcase results for grantors and perspectives.
  • Partner with FRD to quantify the impact of donor-advised philanthropy, create connections (based on donor interest) with JPSA and community impact priorities, and work to align activities such as giving circles with the JPSA’s strategic initiatives.
  • Collaborate with FRD to create/implement a new giving paradigm to support JPSA impact and guide approaches to annual, supplemental, emergency, anniversary and planned giving; participate in select direct solicitation of individuals and foundations, and steward funding partners.
  • Enhance the organization-wide approach to drive impact across JPSA in alignment with new strategic initiatives, including in areas of Jewish education, engagement, leadership, Israel engagement, partner organization resilience, and public affairs, including as this relates to
    donor-directed philanthropic activities, impact investing, giving circles, and more.
  • Guide development of a strategic system of impact collection and evaluation across JPSA, to quantify impact and utilize data to re-tool strategies for increased effectiveness.
  • Partner with Marketing and Communications to support organizational branding and develop/implement a communications strategy that highlights JPSA impact across all areas.
  • Support through strategy, design, and implementation the refocusing of Israel education and help advance a broadened paradigm for Israel engagement.
  • Support through strategy, design, and implementation the refocusing of local Jewish education and help advance a broadened paradigm for Jewish learning across the ages.
  • Support through strategy, design, and implementation the refocusing of strengthening leadership through education and opportunity for JPSA and the broader community.
  • Serve as professional lead for lay committee engaged in Community Impact work (currently, the Ecosystem Council). Assess needs for lay involvement in alignment with strategic initiatives and develop and maintain an appropriate plan for meaningful lay involvement.
  • Manage relationships with partner organizations, synagogues, and other local and overseas beneficiaries, and strengthen collaboration efforts towards an integrated impact strategy.
  • Work with LT, JFNA and outside resources to create integrated approaches to leadership development and community strategy development.
  • Work with LT and JFNA to broaden grants and allocations processes including JPSA’s measurement system to increase short and long-term effectiveness of funded strategies and shape granting and allocation decisions going forward.
  • Be a visible face of JPSA in the community, developing relationships with organizational partners, and providing strong content, thought leadership, and strategy to address complex issues in the Jewish community.

QUALIFICATIONS (SKILLS, ABILITIES, LICENSES)

  • Proven track record of focused, issues-oriented strategic leadership
  • At least 15 years of senior-level management or equivalent experience
  • Experience developing and leading a multi-organizational impact project
  • Experience with Jewish communal life, particularly Jewish education and engagement
  • Experience developing and accessing Jewish engagement programs and leveraging them for the benefit of the community
  • Experience with leading productive teams, grantmaking and administration, and philanthropy
  • Experience developing the trust of senior and experienced volunteers
  • Literacy in financial management and budget development
  • Demonstrated flexibility and creativity and the ability to thrive in a dynamic, entrepreneurial setting
  • Deep appreciation for and an ability to articulate powerfully the values and vision of Jewish Federation
  • Strong organizational, communication, and implementation skills
  • Ability to attend evening events including both Federation and community functions

EDUCATION OR TRAINING EQUIVALENT

  • Graduate degree (at least MA or equivalent)
  • Non-profit leadership
