Job Description:

This is a part-time role with the objective of supporting the rabbi of the Glen Rock Jewish Center, Rabbi Jennifer Schlosberg. Rabbi Schlosberg is the sole religious leader of the synagogue, and is the current president of the North Jersey Board of Rabbis. In addition, Rabbi Schlosberg is an active leader in the interfaith religious community of the town of Glen Rock. She maintains a busy schedule, and is seeking a friendly, organized and cooperative administrative assistant to support her work.

The functions of the role include:

  • Programming support: Rabbi Schlosberg has implemented a host of exciting programs at the GRJC, but it doesn’t happen magically. Event support may require copying, occasional shopping (which necessitate access to a car now and again), light food prep, taking pictures, and some light clean-up. And the rabbi may ask you to draft thank-you notes to all of those involved in the efforts.
  • Light Social Media Support: The rabbi may ask for assistance in adding to the GRJC social media presence, in coordination with the Outreach and Communications Coordinator.
  • Calendar: Carefully maintain Rabbi Schlosberg’s meetings and appointments with members of the broad GRJC community, including people in need of pastoral care. Tools include Google Calendar, Calendly, and Zoom.
  • Administrative: Assist with paper (printing, organizing & filing, managing expense reporting, etc.) all while progressing toward becoming a digital workplace.
  • Communications: This role requires someone who is skilled in both oral and written communication. Your approach to everyone should be friendly and non-confrontational, while also protective of the rabbi’s time. You may be asked to screen calls prior to the rabbi taking them. The rabbi may ask you to proofread written pieces and make sure basic programming details are correct in publicity.

 Hours Available and Salary:

This is a part-time position, approximately 20 hours per week with a salary of $20 per hour. We can work with you to create a schedule that is mutually beneficial, including opportunities to work from home for part of your schedule, but it is preferred that you will work on Fridays or the day before a holiday, as this is the rabbi’s busy day preparing before Shabbat or the holiday. Some of our programs are in the evening and we ideally seek a candidate who can be present at these evening programs while reducing their daytime hours for that week. We know the dates of these programs in advance so you can prepare accordingly.

 Who You’ll Report to:

You will report directly to Rabbi Schlosberg, while also having the support of our Board of Trustees so you can be successful at your job. The rabbi strives to bring meaning and joy to the community, but often is held back by the day-to-day administrative tasks of her job. We look forward to bringing you to our team so you can help our community execute long-term visionary goals by removing some of those administrative tasks from her plate. Rabbi Schlosberg will respect and care about your work-life balance and warmly support you in the success of your job. In addition to properly training you for the job, let’s start with coffee or lunch to welcome you to our team!

 Our Community and Team:

It is a pleasure working for the GRJC. Our staff get along, support one another and we have a collaborative team-mentality. We cover for each other when someone is sick or has another family obligation. We also collaborate well with our team of volunteers and Board of Trustees.

 Non-Discrimination Clause:

The GRJC will not discriminate or select candidates for this job based on race, age, sex, gender-identity or expression, religion, sexual orientation, disability, marital status or political affiliation. We seek to foster an environment that makes everyone feel safe. Therefore, given the current climate in the world, with increased antisemitism, we expect that the person filling this role will not support, publicly or privately, antisemitic or anti-Zionist efforts, nor should candidates support hate of any kind.

To Apply:

To apply, please send a resume and cover letter to Rabbi Schlosberg at [email protected]. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Good luck!
