Chochmat HaLev is a thriving Jewish spiritual community in Berkeley, CA, with over 300 members, known for our welcoming and inclusive approach, high-energy musical prayer services, deep meditation and contemplative offerings, and wide range of classes and programs that offer meaningful spiritual experiences for all ages.
Position overview:
The Director of Operations is a new leadership role responsible for overseeing the financial, administrative, and operational functions of the community. This individual will ensure smooth daily operations, financial sustainability, and a well-managed facility, all while fostering a collaborative and mission-driven work environment. Reporting directly to the Board and working closely with clergy, staff, and lay leadership, the Director of Operations plays a critical role in supporting the synagogue’s long-term growth and stability.
Key Responsibilities
Administration (20%):
? Oversee daily operations, including facilities management, office administration, vendor contracts, and technology systems.
? Implement and improve administrative processes to enhance efficiency and member experience.
? Work closely with the Board of Directors, providing financial and operational reports to guide decision-making.
? Ensure compliance with bylaws, policies, and legal requirements.
? Supervise management of synagogue databases, website updates, and digital communications, ensuring effective member outreach.
? Coordinate communication across committees and reporting updates to the Executive Committee and the Board.
Financial Oversight (50%):
? Develop and manage the annual budget in partnership with the Treasurer and Finance Committee.
? Work with the Treasurer and Finance Committee to maintain fiscal responsibility and transparency.
? Ensure timely financial reporting, monitor cash flow, and oversee accounts payable/receivable and grant management.
? Oversee financial reporting, cash flow management, and expense tracking.
? Work with accountants to ensure timely and accurate reporting, audits, and tax filings.
HR and Staff Management (20%):
? Supervise operations, facilities, and event staff, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
? Develop and maintain synagogue HR policies and procedures in alignment with our values.
? Support hiring, onboarding, and talent development processes.
? Manage relationships and contracts with external contractors, including educators and service providers.
? Negotiate cost-effective agreements while ensuring high-quality service.
Facilities & Security (10%):
? Supervise our Facilities Manager and oversee building maintenance, repairs, and capital improvements.
? Coordinate security measures, working with local authorities and security professionals to ensure a safe environment.
? Oversee vendor relationships related to building operations and security.
? Manage long-term rentals.
Desired Qualifications and Skills:
? 5+ years of experience in nonprofit operations, synagogue management, or relevant experience.
? Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, financial reporting, and contract negotiation.
? Experience supervising staff and managing HR functions.
? Ability to collaborate with clergy, staff, and lay leadership in a mission-driven environment.
? Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
? Knowledge of facility management and security best practices.
? Strong technology acumen and deep familiarity with relevant digital tools
? Understanding of and appreciation for Jewish communal life, values, and traditions preferred.
