Hebrew School Teacher: Grade 1 or 2 (2024-25 School Year)

How do we help children bring Judaism to life for themselves? This is the question that motivates our youth learning at Kerem Shalom, a progressive Jewish community in Concord, Massachusetts.

Kerem Shalom is currently looking for teachers for our students in grades 1 and 2. These grades focus on helping children to: feel comfortable and joyful in the synagogue environment, be able to identify key aspects of and celebrate Jewish holidays, and build familiarity with Hebrew letters and Jewish vocabulary. We support students in building meaningful connections with one another, and teachers also accompany students to various special experiences (such as music and cooking activities). Curricular resources are provided.

Hebrew School teachers are part of a supportive, professional Hebrew School faculty and are supervised by Kerem Shalom’s Director of Education and Engagement. Previous experience working with children, especially those with diverse learning needs, is  preferred. Knowledge of Hebrew is a plus, but not required. We look forward to meeting candidates who are inspired by children and are excited about bringing Judaism to life in engaging and creative ways.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach one class of 5-10 students, in grade 1 or grade 2:
    • Help students form connections with one another and feel comfortable in a synagogue setting

    • Accompany students to specials during the Hebrew School day
    • Collaborate with the Director of Education and Engagement on supporting students with diverse learning and behavioral needs
  • Communicate with students’ parents/guardians as needed
  • Participate in grade-level special events (such as the grade 1-2 Shabbat service and the grade 1-2 family education program)

Time Commitment (2024-25 School Year):

  • Mondays, 4:15-6:15pm
  • 24 class sessions (September through May), plus two faculty learning sessions or meetings
  • Classes meet in person at Kerem Shalom (659 Elm St., Concord)

Compensation: $50-80/hr, commensurate with experience

  • For undergraduate college students: up to $50/session transportation reimbursement if needed
