Synagogue Kitchen Mashgiach


Position Responsibilities Include:

  • Overseeing all incoming deliveries to the BSBI kitchens and ensuring proper kosher certification on all items
  • Checking of vegetables, fruits, and other required products
  • Turning on all cooking / heating equipment
  • Ensuring that others in the kitchen perform work duties in keeping with kosher laws
  • Ensuring no outside food is brought into the kitchens
  • Ensuring any food prepared for outside use is properly sealed and labeled
  • Unlocking and locking kitchen for all jobs
  • Contacting Rabbi with any kashrut questions or issues
  • Following all procedures for proper Kosher supervision, including on-site presence, as per Torah law and in line with BSBI kitchen policies

Experience & Educational Background:

  • At least 6 months of related experience is required
  • Mashgiach certification or training is preferable


Skills & Competencies:

  • Comprehensive understanding of kashrut laws
  • Must be able to handle food according to established sanitary guidelines
  • Ability to work successfully with caterers, synagogue staff, volunteers, and customers
  • Needs to understand / learn basic rules and regulations regarding food service
  • Experience in food preparation is a plus, but not required
  • Must be able to stand for multiple hours, if necessary
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs, if necessary

Rabbinic and employer references required

Must be Shomer Shabbas

Must be a regular minyan attendee

Part time work will vary and may take place anytime from 6:45 am to 9:00 pm, but will be scheduled in advance.  Most supervision will be in the morning or early afternoon. 

 

Salary Range:

$25 - $30 per hour

Salary guaranteed to be no less than $2,000 / mo. 

Free Rent (living in synagogue housing)

The shul has staunchly upheld Orthodox Judaism since its establishment 170 years ago, and simultaneously warmly welcomes Jews of all levels of observance and background.

BSBI holds daily, Shabbas, and Holiday services in a beautiful Sanctuary and Chapel in Downtown Charleston, as well as Shabbas and Holiday services at the Minyan House in a nearby suburb.
