Job Title: Director of Communications

About Us: Congregation Emanu El, a vibrant and historic Reform Jewish synagogue with a membership of 1,600 families in Houston, is dedicated to building a warm, inclusive, and dynamic community. With a focus on worship, education, social action, and meaningful connection, we seek to create an environment where Jewish traditions thrive and adapt to contemporary needs.

Position Overview: The Communications Director will be responsible for developing, managing, and executing a comprehensive communications strategy to enhance Congregation Emanu El's visibility, engagement, and impact. This is a senior level staff position with a strategic role which reports to the Executive Director.  The Communications Director will collaborate with clergy and staff to provide communications support as needed, and also with Board and lay leadership as requested by the Executive Director.  The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, a skilled storyteller, and a proactive leader who can effectively share our mission and activities with our members and the broader community.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement an integrated communications and marketing plan.
  • Oversee the creation and distribution of all print and digital materials, including newsletters, emails, social media content, and the congregation's website.
  • Manage and grow the synagogue's presence across social media platforms.
  • Ensure consistency in branding, messaging, and tone across all communication channels.
  • Collaborate with clergy, staff, and lay leadership to promote synagogue events, programs, and initiatives.
  • Write, edit, and proofread content for publications, press releases, and digital platforms.
  • Manage the public-facing website; responsible for keeping all content up to date, relevant, and engaging.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors, including graphic designers, photographers, and printers.
  • Monitor and analyze communication metrics to evaluate effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
  • Provide communication support for fundraising campaigns, membership initiatives, and major events.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in communications, marketing, or public relations, preferably in a nonprofit or faith-based setting.
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Proficiency in website management tools (e.g., WordPress) and email marketing platforms.
  • Experience with social media management and analytics tools.
  • Graphic design skills and familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite or Canva preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively.
  • Ability
  • Knowledge of Jewish culture, traditions, and values is not required, but a plus.
