Executive Director of Hebrew Free Loan Association of Washington State
Title: Executive Director, Type: Part-time, Location: Puget Sound area, WA, Salary: $55,000 - $70,000
The Organization
The Hebrew Free Loan Association (HFLA) of Washington State helps Washington State Jewish residents with interest-free loans. HFLA offers no-interest, no-fee loans that provide a safety net and a gateway to opportunity for the Washington State Jewish community. We are the only provider of interest-free loans in the state. HFLA was incorporated in Washington in 1914 and has been helping our Jewish community since then.
Position Summary
The Executive Director, reporting to the Board of Directors, will partner with the Board to execute HFLA’s mission with donors and the broader Jewish community. The Executive Director is responsible for the organization’s achievement of its mission and financial objectives. The Executive Director will work with the Board on strategic planning and implementation, effectively manage HFLA’s programs and loan procedures, and lead fundraising and communication efforts while overseeing day-to-day administrative operations and HFLA staff.
This is a part-time position (28 - 35 hours/week) with a flexible schedule and includes some weekend availability. Review at 6 months. While remote, the successful candidate must reside within the Puget Sound area. The office is closed on Fridays.

Leadership and Board Engagement
- Attend Board meetings
- Work with the Board of Directors in strategic, fundraising, and annual planning
- Support the Board of Directors in implementing annual plans and goals
- Create and send board packets, including agendas, director’s reports, financial reports, etc.
- Ensure required records (e.g., meeting notes, program documents, and legal documents) are stored appropriately
- Ensure that the Board is kept informed on the condition of the organization and factors influencing it
- Ensure job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place
- Encourage and support staff development and education
- Maintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a staff of top-quality people
Fundraising and Stakeholder Engagement
- Create and implement an annual fundraising plan with the Board of Directors
- Actively work to raise funds and operate within the annual budget
- Support Board members in engaging in fundraising by identifying, soliciting, and stewarding donors
- Plan, lead, and implement the annual Brunch fundraiser event with the Development Committee
- Search for and apply for grants applicable to HFLA’s mission
- Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs, and goals
- Manage website and issue monthly or bi-monthly e-newsletters
- Communicate important program application dates with The Federation, Synagogues, the SJCC etc.
- Manage the Life & Legacy program and maintain coordination with program partners: The Jewish Federation and Harold Grinspoon Foundation
- Manage outreach and appreciation programs and communications for HFLA Lifetime Members
- Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations
Programmatic Oversight and Management
- Actively manage the daily operations of the organization
- Provide daily supervision to the staff (currently consisting of Loan Coordinator, Bookkeeper, and Accountant)
- Facilitate information flow to staff and vendors to ensure they can complete their work promptly
- Oversee General and Mini Loan Programs, including application, determination, and repayment aspects
- Oversee Scholarship Program and Student Access Fund, including application, determination, and announcement
- Work with the Board Treasurer, Finance committee, and the Board to prepare an annual budget
- Work with Board, Treasurer, bookkeeper, and accountant to support monthly financial reporting and reconciliation
- Establish effective and consistent borrower vetting procedures with the Loan Coordinator, Loan Committee, and Board
- Maintain official records and documents and ensure compliance with federal state regulations, including non-profit status filings
- Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be familiar with the Jewish community and donors of Puget Sound. They will have previous experience with grant writing and reporting as well as general fundraising. They should be self-motivated, self-disciplined, and comfortable in multiple aspects of non-profit operations. Prior experience and comfort managing budgets and staff. Strong written and verbal communication skills, 5+ years of previous work experience, and a bachelor’s degree preferred.

- Google Suite: Working knowledge of Google Suite, including Gmail, Contacts, Forms
- Microsoft: Excel, Word, PowerPoint
- Adobe: PDF and Forms, creating board packets
- Website: the ability to work with WIX website to edit the site
- Constant Contact: HFLA’s email communication program
- Form Publisher: Transforms Google Forms into readable PDF files
