About Us

Congregation Beth Shalom is a thriving Conservative synagogue located in  Northbrook, Illinois, part of Chicago’s beautiful North Shore. We have evolved  to become one of the largest Conservative synagogues in the Midwest,  boasting a membership of more than 950 households. We are dedicated to  promoting family and community through prayer, study, community service,  and social gatherings. Our membership reflects a healthy balance of multi generational families and newcomers. You can learn more about our  community at www.bethshalomnb.org.

About the Role

We are seeking a third clergy member (rabbi or cantor) who will embody the  very best of our Jewish Neshama. This person should be engaging, dynamic  and energetic; all traits that contribute to the strength and growth of our CBS family.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

We are seeking an individual with the following skills:

  • Spiritual Leadership: The rabbi or cantor should inspire our congregants and guests to fully and enthusiastically participate in our service through words and music.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills: We are looking for an individual who provides spiritual and emotional support to our members in a variety of settings. The individual should be equally comfortable leading religious services, sharing sermons and Divrei Torah, addressing B’nai Mitzvah students, marking lifecycle events from the bimah, writing bulletin articles, and speaking at Board meetings and events.
  • Musical Abilities: We are looking for a clergy member who possesses substantive musical skills. We are seeking someone who inspires ruach and spirituality through singing and/or through a musical instrument. Infusing our current musical programs with fresh and creative energy, as well as expanding our repertoire of musical events, are high priorities for us.
  • Pastoral Counseling and Care: CBS is fortunate enough to have a large congregation that encompasses all age groups. It is imperative that our clergy be prepared to address the variety of needs that surface from our diverse membership. We consider all life-cycle events, whether they be joyful or sad occasions, important touch points which help to create strong and meaningful bonds between our clergy and congregants.
  • Collaboration: The individual must be able to work alongside our other clergy members, as well as the members of the synagogue staff and lay leaders.
  • Imaginative and Creative: The rabbi or cantor should be eager to propose imaginative and cutting-edge initiatives. We are justifiably known and admired as an innovative and collaborative synagogue in which all are encouraged to give voice to new ideas with the full support of our clergy, lay leaders, and staff.

We seek an ordained rabbi or cantor who is comfortable serving in a USCJ affiliated congregation. A successful candidate must be a member of (or willing to join) either the RA or CA.

Compensation

The Synagogue will offer salary and benefits commensurate with experience.  The position includes a spacious, well-maintained parsonage in the neighborhood of the synagogue.

How to Apply

Please send a resume and cover letter to Search Committee Co-Chair Brad Shaps at [email protected]. The review of applications will be on a rolling basis. We anticipate a start date of July 1, 2025.
