The Astoria Center of Israel’s overarching mission is to provide a warm, supportive, and lively Jewish atmosphere in order for children to gain an awareness of Jewish life and to foster and strengthen their sense of pride in their Jewish heritage and identity. 

Our growing school is seeking to fill the following part time positions for the 2024-2025 school year. 

Hebrew Language teacher 

Experienced Hebrew language instructor who is dynamic, engaging, and creative, using art, movement, and music, and is able to teach 3 levels of students;  Kitah Aleph (ages 6 - 7 who are new to the Hebrew alphabet) Kitah Bet (ages 8 - 10 who can read and understand simple words) and Kitah Gimmel (ages 10 - 12 who can read and understand simple sentences). The candidate will work closely with 2 other educators and an Education Director,  has good communication skills, and can write and adapt their own lesson plans that follow a curriculum guide. 

Classes meet Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 - 5:30 PM and run from Tuesday, September 10, 2024 through Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Teachers should be able to commit to the above schedule, including occasional community events outside of class hours (such as the Purim Party, the Chanukah Party) for which they will be compensated. 

Rate: $65 - $75 / hour, commensurate with experience. Although being a native speaker is a plus but not a requirement, applicants should be fluent and  have a strong command of the Hebrew language. Ability to play guitar a plus.

Art and Music teacher

Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic, engaging, and creative Art and Music Teacher to join our vibrant team. The ideal candidate is experienced and has a passion working with Jewish children across different age groups, possesses the ability to inspire and cultivate creativity in students, and can incorporate Jewish themes into their lessons. This role requires a blend of artistic skill, teaching experience, and a genuine love for fostering a positive and enriching learning environment. Ability to play an instrument a strong plus!

Rate: $65 - $75 / hour, commensurate with experience. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Write and follow their own lesson plans that align with the school’s educational goals and Jewish values.
  • Create and deliver engaging lessons that cater to various age groups and skill levels, ensuring all students have the opportunity to express themselves creatively.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel encouraged to explore their artistic abilities.
  • Utilize a range of teaching methods and materials to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and Education Director to integrate art and music into the broader educational experience.
  • Organize and participate in school events, performances, and exhibitions to showcase students’ work and talents.
  • Maintain an organized and inspiring classroom space that reflects the creativity and energy of the students.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience teaching art and/or music to children, preferably in a Hebrew school or camp setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and motivate students with diverse backgrounds and learning needs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a genuine enthusiasm for working with children.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, parents, and the school community.
  • Knowledge of Jewish culture and traditions.
