Hillel Day School Mission Statement

Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit (www.hillelday.org) delivers an outstanding general and Jewish education to Jewish children from early childhood through eighth grade. At Hillel, we inspire a passion for learning, responsibility to self and community, and devotion to Jewish living in a warm, innovative, and engaging environment.

Opportunity

Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit, a community Jewish day school in Farmington Hills, Michigan that serves 602 students from eighteen months through eighth-grade, seeks an innovative, visionary, inspirational, and passionate Rav Beit Sefer (School Rabbi) to join its Leadership Team on August 1, 2025. Reporting to the Head of School, the School Rabbi serves as the School’s Rabbinic leader in support of the overall school mission. Key responsibilities fall into three categories as outlined below.

 

1) Rabbinic functions within the School

 

  • Sets a vision for the actualization of Jewish life throughout the School
  • Functions as part of the Leadership Team and advises the Team on spiritual and moral issues
  • Serves as resource to the Board of Trustees and the Leadership Team on the ethical issues that arise in the interpretation of the School’s mission statement and student behavior code
  • Organizes and executes activities for all Jewish holidays throughout the entire School
  • Leads Middle School minyan and efforts to enhance tefillah education throughout the entire school
  • Innovates and executes weekly Shabbat experiences for all students during school hours, which currently manifests as our Shabbat Mishpacha initiative.
  • Leads in organizing and chaperoning Middle School Shabbatonim
  • Serves as a guide in creating for our students positive Jewish family experiences, partnering with parents and grandparents – no matter their observance level – in enhancing students’ overall connection to and practice of Judaism. This includes working with parents regarding appropriate observances at birthday parties and B’nei mitzvah celebration.

2) Teaching and Learning

 

 

  • Elevates the excellence of Hebrew language teaching and learning (along with Director of Judaic Studies Curriculum and Instruction)
  • Conducts regular classroom visits

3) Community Connector

 

  • Serves as Hillel’s liaison to the Michigan Board of Rabbis through attendance at monthly meetings
  • Provides Pastoral counseling and visits as needed (e.g., bereavement, shiva)
  • Functions as a Jewish resource for faculty, students, parents, alumni
  • Represents the School at school functions and programs

Qualifications

  • Rabbinic Ordination 
  • Judaic teaching experience
  • Extensive knowledge of, and proficiency with, Jewish text including Tanakh, Mishnah, Talmud, and other commentaries
  • Facility with Hebrew language
  • Unwavering Zionist beliefs and practices
  • Knowledge of, and adherence to, Shabbat, Jewish holidays, and observances
  • Ability to lead tefillah in Hebrew
  • Ability to lead school B’nei Mitzvah services
  • A strong worth ethic, including the ability to work efficiently and graciously under pressure; meet deadlines; demonstrate strategic thinking and good decision-making; maintain and model high personal, ethical, and professional standards; and have a sense of humor and ability to have fun
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills that are necessary to work well with all aspects of the Hillel community as well as the larger Jewish community.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace


Compensation

Our competitive compensation package includes tuition remission for children enrolled at the School, medical benefits, dental, vision, life insurance, 403(b) with a salary match, and generous personal time off. Vacation during the month of July.
