ASSISTANT CAMP DIRECTOR 

Reports to: Camp Director 

Status: Part-time, Non-Exempt

Schedule: 10-15 hours per week mid-August to mid-May; full-time mid-May to mid-August.

Salary and Benefits: $25-28 per hour, staff discounts on camp and other Temple programs

Background: 

Temple Rodef Shalom is a Reform Jewish congregation located in the Northern Virginia suburbs just outside Washington, DC. Since our founding in 1962, we have grown into the largest Jewish congregation in Virginia, serving over 1,750 households. We serve 200 families in our Early Childhood Center, nearly 800 students in our Religious School, over 400 campers and staff each summer, and hundreds of people each week who walk through our doors to pray, sing, learn, connect, and mark life cycle moments. 

The Assistant Camp Director is critical to ensuring that our award-winning day camp, which serves 300 campers (ages 4-13) and hires nearly 150 staff each summer, runs smoothly and efficiently.  

Essential Responsibilities:  

Camp Season (May-August) 

  • Oversee daily operations: confirm room setups, ordering of camp supplies and food (snacks, staff lunch) and Maintain summer expenses spreadsheet
  • Use daily attendance records to manage payroll
  • Coordinate weekly emails to parents and staff, and conduct phone outreach as needed  
  • Oversee Camp Office in partnership with the Office Manager
  • Serve as a member of the leadership team and a thought partner to the Camp Director, including helping to plan and implement staff orientation and safety and security trainings
  • Manage daily schedule, making adjustments as needed throughout the summer
  • Manage HR paperwork and forms for camp staff
  • Manage camper paperwork including health forms, emergency contact information, etc.
  • Serve as primary camp leader when Camp Director is offsite 

Other responsibilities

  • Assist Camp Director in program planning: book trips, identify new opportunities to explore 
  • Represent camp at professional conferences (ACA, Foundation for Jewish Camping) 
  • Serve as part of the TRS Youth Engagement Team, attending congregational or youth programs as needed to build relationships with counselors, campers, and families 
  • Oversee all media content, including the camp website, social media, and print/email materials 

Other related duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Camp Director  

Core Competencies and Required Skills:  

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to connect with diverse personalities  
  • Professional yet warm, friendly, and enthusiastic attitude 
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task and prioritize  
  • Sensitivity to confidential information and the appropriate maturity to exercise discretion 
  • Enjoys working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, is also self-motivated and able to take initiative
  • Comfortable using a range of technology: Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Zoom, social media
  • Knowledge of CampMinder, Wix, and CSM programs is a plus but not required
  • An understanding of synagogue life, and/or Jewish holidays and customs is a plus 

Education and Experience:  

  • Associate degree required; four-year college degree preferred  
  • Experience working with children, ideally in a camp or informal setting, required
  • Experience in a customer service-related role required 
  • Training in business and financial management is a plus  

Additional Requirements: 

  • Ability to move throughout the temple grounds for long periods of time 
  • Ability to sit at a desk doing computer work for 2-3 hours at a time
