Temple Micah, Bookkeeper/Finance Manager

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Temple Micah, a vibrant and creative Reform congregation of over 650 families in Washington, DC, is seeking a Bookkeeper/Finance Manager. This position is responsible for the day-to-day management and execution of finances at the temple. This includes accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, HR, billing, contributions, and budget and funds tracking and reporting. Further, this position supervises an assistant who focuses on accounts receivable and contributes to fulfilling the responsibilities set out below. 

This is a full-time, exempt position. It is not eligible for regular remote or telework, though occasional remote work may be permitted.

REPORTS TO:

Executive Director

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Bookkeeping

  • Perform all bookkeeping functions (A/R, A/P)

  • Maintain and updates chart of accounts and classes in Quickbooks, and mapping to synced A/R and A/P platforms

  • Reconcile bank statements, credit cards, payroll, benefits

  • Reconcile billings to membership, school enrollment

  • Oversee assistant in performance of A/R tasks

  • Lead financial components of annual membership renewal

  • Oversee online payment activity in synagogue database, including extensive individualized follow-up with donors as needed

  • Work with outside accountant on a monthly basis to review bank reconciliations and other tasks in Quickbooks and to produce accurate financial reports for the annual financial review

  • Collect and maintain records of W-9s for all contractors, and produce and e-file 1099 forms annually

Human Resources

  • Oversee and process payroll

    • Process payroll for all staff and maintain accurate compensation records in employee portal, payroll system, and pension platform

    • Manage benefits platforms and annual open enrollment, including deductions and company contributions in payroll

    • E-files some state and federal income tax withholding reports and reviews accuracy of employee’s W-4s

  • Manage employee portal and onboarding/offboarding of personnel (includes state and federal tax forms, I-9 verifications, benefits, background checks, etc)

  • Seek counsel and coordinate with outside HR consultants, as needed

Coordination with Staff, Board, and Finance Committee

  • Produce reports, including quarterly budget and restricted funds for board, membership, event and school registration, budget updates for departments heads

  • Meet with staff and volunteers to review financial records related to various activities

  • Work closely with Education team and other staff to ensure accuracy of and process payroll for part-time employees

Financial Records & Database

  • Manage financial software implementation (Quickbooks Online, Quickbooks Payroll, expense reporting platform, bill payment system, and Synagogue membership database)

  • Manage accuracy of data in synagogue database and donor’s financial accounts

  • Track small number of grants 

Supervision

  • Delegate work and provide day-to-day supervision of assistant

  • Conduct performance review and support professional development for assistant

 

EXPERIENCE

  • 3-5 years of finance experience (including payroll)

  • Supervisory experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of cash and accrual methods of accounting, as well as generally accepted accounting principles with an emphasis on non-profit finance.

  • Experience with payroll and payroll taxes

  • Knowledge of Quickbooks Online, Quickbooks Payroll, general HR practices, and familiarity working with spreadsheets 

  • Excellent organizational skills and a keen attention to detail

  • Strong verbal communications skills

  • A positive and cheerful approach to people

  • Sound judgment and commitment to confidentiality 

  • Inquisitive, motivated, willing to learn

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

SALARY & BENEFITS:

  • The salary for this job is $65,000-75,000 (depending on experience)
