Kitchen Manager and Mashgiach/Mashgicha

Ohr Kodesh Congregation

Chevy Chase, MD

20 hours per week

Ohr Kodesh Congregation, a traditional Conservative congregation in Chevy Chase, MD, has an opening for a Kitchen Manager and Mashgiach/Mashgicha (“Kashrut Manager”). Under the halachic authority of Rabbi Corey Helfand, Rabbi of Ohr Kodesh, and the staff direction of the Facilities Manager, the Kitchen Manager is responsible for ensuring that the kitchen is clean and organized, needed equipment is available and in good working order, appropriate food safety and health practices are followed, and kitchen operations are accomplished efficiently by staff and volunteers.

In compliance with the kashrut standards of the Congregation, the Kitchen Manager will organize and oversee volunteer mashgichim to ensure that an approved supervisor is present at all required times when food is being received, prepared or served, and that all procured food meets our kosher standards.

Kitchen Manager Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the kitchen, the available equipment and utensils, are clean and in good working order, in collaboration with the maintenance staff, Facilities Manager, and Rabbi.
  • Enable the staff and volunteers who use the kitchen to be able to do so efficiently.
  • Support volunteers and staff as they prepare for kitchen use: help with the necessary inventory management, and liaise between volunteers and the Facilities Manager, who typically places food orders.
  • Engage and interface with families/members who are planning food-related events in partnership and collaboration with the Rabbi, Executive Director, Facilities Manager, and volunteers.
  • Maintain a roster of kitchen users and usage schedule to ensure that the space is not double-booked and that different users are able to successfully prepare and cook for their various events.
  • Coordinate and maintain the roster of approved, trained supervisors working under the direction of the Mashgiach/Mashgicha and under the authority of Rabbi Helfand.
  • Ensure that supervision is present in the kitchen at all times when it is needed - both from a kitchen management and from a kashrut perspective. Some amount of supervision will be the responsibility of the Kitchen Manager himself/herself/themself, especially during weekdays.
  • Ensure separation of meat and dairy equipment, utensils and areas of the kitchen (and storage) in accordance with the kashrut standards and requirements determined by Rabbi Helfand.
  • Ensure that all food used in the Ohr Kodesh kitchen meets the congregation’s approved kashrut standards. This includes all food used by the congregation’s constituent groups, schools, tenants and other users.
  • Ensure that food service on Shabbat and Jewish holidays follows the Shabbat and/or holiday food preparation and reheating practices authorized by Rabbi Helfand.
  • Work with Rabbi Helfand and volunteer leaders to identify suitable candidates for training as mashgichim/ot and assist Rabbi Helfand in conducting training for mashgichim/ot. Rabbi Helfand must approve any mashgiach before s/he can be assigned to work as an Ohr Kodesh mashgiach.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of laws of kashrut and their practical application to food preparation and service in an organizational/commercial setting is a plus. Willingness to learn and adhere is required.
  • Observes Shabbat and Kashrut in accordance with requirements as determined by Rabbi Helfand for this position.
  • Has experience with kitchen management in a commercial or organizational food service environment.
  • Agrees to work under the supervising authority of Rabbi Corey Helfand to ensure kashrut of the Ohr Kodesh kitchens, food prepared in them, and food served at Ohr Kodesh whether prepared in the synagogue or procured elsewhere.
  • Availability to personally supervise major congregational events (including approx. one to two Shabbatot each month) and to coordinate required coverage for all events. The Kitchen Manager is the bottom liner for kashrut supervision and is expected to be present unless appropriate supervision has been arranged by the Kitchen Manager.
  • Works cooperatively with supervisors and colleagues.
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing.
  • Uses computer-based communication systems and collaboration tools with skill (Email, GoogleDocs, spreadsheets, common computer applications, etc.)
  • Manages volunteers effectively and recognizes/acknowledges their service.
  • Has supervisory experience and can schedule and manage teams of paid and volunteer mashgichim/ot (kashrut supervisors) to ensure all events needing supervision are staffed.
  • ServSafe or similar certification is a plus.

  • Compensation is $30,000 per year, less applicable taxes and withholdings, for the fiscal year.
  • You will be entitled to any benefits available to part-time personnel, as specified in our Ohr Kodesh Personnel Manual
