Position: Youth Choir Director

Overview: The Village Temple is a Reform synagogue in downtown Manhattan founded in 1948.  We are looking to hire a Choir Director after our Director of 38 years retires this spring.  The VT Youth Choir is a special community within the larger synagogue.  Children build deep friendships and learn about Jewish holidays and values all through the lens of Jewish music. Our youth choir director should bring enthusiasm, an eagerness to work with children, creativity, a love for Jewish music, and a sense of humor.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Choir
    • Lead a weekly choir rehearsal – 1 hour a week for approximately 27 weeks (a few extra rehearsals for High Holiday and Purim may be required).   
    • Choose selections for several shabbats including, Hanukkah, Passover and potentially Martin Luther King Jr observance. 
    • Lead children’s choir at High Holiday services – during children’s service only.
    • Write/purchase, cast and rehearse with children to perform Purim Shpiel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding of needs and challenges for children
  • Enthusiastic positive attitude for working with children ages 6-16. 
  • Ability to adapt to different learning styles
  • Ability to work with minimal guidance and oversight
  • Strong people skills, including recruitment for choral activities
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in music performance or music education or equivalent experience. 
  • Minimum of three years’ experience leading a choir and/or music program
  • Knowledge of Jewish music
