About Fig Tree

Fig Tree is a progressive, Brooklyn-based independent Jewish education program for children ages 3 – 13. The purpose of Fig Tree is to provide a rich and accessible Jewish education to kids from interfaith, interracial and/ or secular backgrounds- or simply to families seeking a Hebrew School alternative.

Job Description

We’re seeking a smart, friendly and energetic Part Time Assistant Teacher to help with class activities, discussions and classroom management. This person will also provide Hebrew support to students individually and in small groups. 

Before and after classes, Assistant Teacher will function as a Site Manager, and will: warmly greet students and families at arrival and dismissal; oversee location logistics (including providing teacher support); and will expertly problem-solve any issues that arise. 

 

Responsibilities: 

Assistant Teacher Responsibilities

  1. Work 1:1 or in small groups with students on Hebrew language skills (reading/ decoding, vocabulary, grammar);
  2. Facilitate project work or special activities in the classroom; 
  3. Substitute for teachers during unexpected absence. [Dependent on experience.] 

Site Manager Responsibilities

  1. Be a “schmoozer” - warmly greet students and families at arrival and dismissal; 
  2. Function as a site host: answer questions, direct families, assist teachers as needed;
  3. Follow on-site safety protocols (and ensure that staff and families also follow them);
  4. Follow Fig Tree procedure to handle student sickness or other emergencies;
  5. Be a hands-on champion of Fig Tree’s “positive discipline” approach, supporting students and teachers as needed;
  6. Sweep, wipe surfaces, and make sure classrooms are neat at the end of each class session; 
  7. [Possible for additional hours] Pick students up from school and bring them to Fig Tree class location. 

Additional Responsibilities (optional flex hours): 

  1. Manage RSVPs for events and roster creation/ attendance. 
  2. Prepare supplies for classes. 
  3. Oversee Fig Tree social media platforms. 
  4. Attend Fig Tree holiday and shabbat events. 
  5. Chaperone student field trips and service projects. 

Qualifications

  • The right candidate is bright and energetic- able to comfortably communicate with both kids and adults in a professional manner;
  • Must have knowledge of and interest in Judaism (ritual, holidays, culture and text). Hebrew language proficiency is required;
  • Must have minimum 2-years experience working with children in an educational, community center, or camp setting;
  • Provide proof of ability to work as required by local and federal laws;
  • All candidates are subject to background check.

Schedule

This is a part-time, seasonal position, from September 2025 to June 2026. Fig Tree is off for major Jewish holidays, and whenever NYC public or private schools are not in session. Our full calendar is here

 Assistant teacher will arrive 30 minutes before classes begin at each site, and will remain on site for 30 minutes after the last class is finished. We will consider applicants who can work at least two days per week.

  • Tuesdays 
    • Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn - 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM (Hannah Senesh, 342 Smith St) 
    • Harlem, 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM (JCC Harlem, 318 W 118th St)
  • Wednesdays 
    • Park Slope, Brooklyn - 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM in Park Slope (BAX, 421 5th Ave) 
    • Clinton Hill, Brooklyn - 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM (Brooklyn Waldorf School 11 Jefferson Ave)
  • Thursdays 
    • Park Slope, Brooklyn - 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM (BAX, 421 5th Ave)
    • Greenpoint, Brooklyn - 3:00-6:00 (61 Greenpoint Ave, Loft 502)

 

Compensation

$30 - $35 per hour
