Sometimes we all need a shoulder to lean on. Jewish Family Service of Central New Jersey (JFS) has been that shoulder for in excess of one hundred years, to the residents of Union County. No matter what the challenge, from economic depressions, world wars, natural and manmade disasters and even Covid-19, JFS has found important ways to support our community. We proudly provide our services on a non-sectarian basis and have become an integral social services agency, working closely with charitable and government organizations to provide essential services.

What services does JFS offer? It is probably better to ask what social services we don’t offer. Quite literally from cradle to grave, our vibrant Agency located in Elizabeth, NJ, just 30 minutes from NY, provides quality services to vulnerable residents. One has the quiet that comes from being outside of New York, yet all the vibrancy that comes from being part of an engaged community.

We are looking for an Executive Director who can steer this impactful Agency through its next level of growth. The position requires a diverse skill set but provides untold rewards!

Position Summary

The Executive Director for Jewish Family Service of Central New Jersey ‘JFS’ is responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction to the organization in order to achieve its mission and goals. The Executive Director leads the organization, including staff, and is responsible for setting the cultural tone. They also recruit, hire, and manage a strong leadership team. This individual oversees all aspects of the agency’s operations, including fundraising, program management, financial management, and staff supervision. The position is full time and reports to the Board of Directors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Developing, implementing, and overseeing a long-term strategic plan for the organization to ensure the organization is constantly evolving and responding to community needs in collaboration with the board of directors. The organization’s most recent goal is to build affordable housing in Union County.
  • Effectively inspiring others with transformative but practical ideas.
  • Building productive relationships with donors, partners, and other key stakeholders to secure funding and support for the agency’s programs and initiatives.
  • Ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, as well as adherence to the organization’s policies and procedures.
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of the agency’s annual budget of $10 million, reviewing financial reports and annual audit.
  • Cultivating and supervising all fundraising plans while managing the agency’s financial resources in a fiscally responsible manner, ensuring the organization has the resources needed to fulfill the strategic plan.
  • Supervising and supporting a team of department directors including social work, nursing, volunteering, housing, finance and administration, public relations, and HR.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the agency’s programs and services and adjusting as needed.
  • Serving as the public face of the organization and representing the organization in the community such as at events, conferences, and other public forums and advocating for its mission and goals.
  • Collaborating with other nonprofit organizations and community partners to leverage resources and maximize impact.
  • Keeping the board of directors informed of the agency’s activities and progress towards its goals.
  • Continuously seeking opportunities for growth and improvement to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the organization.
  • Providing strong leadership and team management to further an encouraging work culture while managing and motivating team members.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive organizational culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Attending monthly board and Executive committee meetings and any other meetings required of the Executive Director.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Master’s degree in social service, business administration, or related field.
  • Three years supervisory of managerial experience in social service or related field.
  • Ability to work effectively with volunteer boards and committees
  • Ability to plan, monitor, and evaluate budgets.
  • Ability to manage people.
  • Ability to organize, plan, and implement activities appropriate to further organizational goals.
