Rabbi/Spiritual Leader for Brattleboro Area Jewish Community

0.75 FTE | 10-months per year position
Start Date: July 1, 2025 | Brattleboro, Vermont

The Brattleboro Area Jewish Community (BAJC), Congregation Shir Heharim (Song of the Mountains), is seeking an inspiring and compassionate Rabbi to guide our vibrant, URJ-affiliated community of over 100 households. This role offers the opportunity to foster connection, growth, and Jewish traditions in a beautiful Vermont town.

BAJC is a welcoming, inclusive congregation committed to fostering Jewish traditions, culture, and identity through meaningful spiritual, educational, and social experiences. Our congregants value diversity, volunteerism, and community engagement. Our community is diverse and includes zionists, anti-zionists, and non-zionist, people with different traditions and practices, converts, queer and trans people, families, and people of all ages. BAJC is a well organized and financially stable synagogue, housed in a beautifully restored historic farmhouse, with large services held in a nearby building we have rented for many decades. Our temple serves as a vibrant hub for services, religious school, and community events.

BAJC seeks a spiritual leader who is:

  • Committed to welcoming and serving all community members
  • An inclusive and inspiring, and community-centric ritual leader
  • A motivated and organized independent and collaborative worker 
  • A clear and compassionate communicator 

Responsibilities

  • Lead spiritual services and rituals, including High Holidays, Shabbat, Passover Seder, and other Jewish holidays.
  • Provide pastoral care and spiritual guidance (e.g., counseling, life cycle events, visiting the sick & mourning).
  • Oversee youth education programs, b’nei mitzvah preparation, and adult learning opportunities
  • Actively engage in Jewish community-building efforts and interfaith organizing.
  • Collaborate with the board on strategic planning and community goals.

Qualifications

  • Formal rabbinical or cantorial ordination is greatly preferred. Equivalent training or spiritual leadership experience may be considered for an exceptional candidate.
  • Exceptional communication, pastoral, and teaching skills.
  • Willingness to live in or near Brattleboro, Vermont.

Preferred: 

  • Experience leading music in services.
  • Experience with children and adult educational curriculum development and coordination.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Total compensation package: $60,000–$75,000 (.75 FTE), 10-month position with opportunity for growth
  • 4 weeks paid time off per year 
  • Flexible schedule and workload options for the right candidate
  • Additional benefits may be negotiated based on individual needs
