Position Title: Senior Outreach Manager
Inspired by Jewish values and ideals, MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger is a national advocacy organization working to end hunger among people of all faiths and backgrounds in the United States and Israel.
For nearly 38 years, MAZON has worked to ensure that laws, policies, and regulations governing access to food are available, accessible, and meaningful to those who need them, particularly populations whose unique needs are too often overlooked: veterans, currently serving military families, Indigenous communities, LGBTQ seniors, single mothers, and the people of Puerto Rico. Our efforts are designed to provide people with the resources they need in a manner that is dignified and without judgement. All people — regardless circumstance — must have access to adequate, nutritious food, while retaining their choice, agency, and dignity.
MAZON is a leading national voice on anti-hunger issues. We work independently and in coalition with partners to protect and strengthen government nutrition programs that help people put food on the table, explore innovative solutions to persistent challenges to food security, and undertake unique strategies to bring such solutions to fruition. We educate communities across the country about the reality of hunger and how they can join us to help end it. We also provide funding to expand advocacy, training, and resources to nonprofit organizations across the United States and Israel, which includes a range of partnerships with local advocacy groups, food banks, legal-service organizations, and statewide coalitions.
Position Overview:
The Senior Outreach Manager implements MAZON’s outreach and education priorities across the country by identifying and developing relationships with individuals and organizations in the Jewish community, including but not limited to schools, synagogues, Jewish communal organizations, organizations engaged in the Jewish social justice sector. The primary goals of the Senior Outreach Manager are to build visibility for MAZON and the issue of hunger within US Jewish communities and mobilize and equip those Jewish communities to respond to the growing hunger crisis through engagement with MAZON.
This position will be remote, with the option of working from MAZON’s office in Los Angeles, CA or Washington, DC.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Raise the visibility of MAZON and its anti-hunger work within the organized Jewish community by identifying, developing, and stewarding relationships with Jewish community-based organizations, including synagogues, schools, summer camps, and youth groups, and additional audiences where appropriate.
- Raise the visibility of MAZON and its anti-hunger work within the Jewish social justice sector by identifying, developing, and stewarding relationships with Jewish social justice organizations, including by engaging with the Jewish Social Justice Roundtable and its members.
- Work to build ground in Jewish communities across the US and surface opportunities for deeper synagogue-, school-, or other community-based organizing efforts;
- Collaborate with Outreach department leadership and Programs and Public Policy departments to align MAZON’s state-based grantmaking and organizing goals with those of the Community Engagement department.
- Identify and secure opportunities to speak, lead advocacy trainings, and facilitate educational programs at local Jewish community events, anti-hunger events, synagogues, schools, etc.
- Train colleagues to lead MAZON’s educational curriculum for groups of all ages, and delegate speaking engagements to other staff members as necessary.
- Develop and sustain relationships with key congregational leaders in local synagogues.
- Support and promote MAZON’s fundraising efforts and priorities with local synagogues.
- Promote and implement MAZON’s youth engagement efforts and priorities.
- Coordinate MAZON’s summer camp programming on an annual basis to lead MAZON’s educational curriculum, and coordinate staffing strategy for those programs.
- Work with the Director of Outreach and Vice President of Community Engagement to plan and execute in person and/or virtual education/engagement events throughout the year. Ensure that goals of events/convenings are achieved, generate feedback post-event, and work with team to implement programmatic changes that meet our audiences’ and MAZON’s needs.
- On-going engagement and programming with rabbis/clergy, educators, students, and other individual volunteers, etc.
- Attend coalition and partnership meetings, with Jewish and anti-hunger groups, as requested. Identify and engage with local and regional coalitions within the Jewish community and Jewish social justice sector.
- Seek out, identify, and respond to all requests for assistance, support, speakers, etc. from local organizations
- Other duties as assigned
Other Job-Related Requirements
- Ability to lift boxes and other materials for occasional events.
- Ability to stand for long hours and into the evening at occasional events.
- Ability to spend hours at a time walking for legislative events and lobby days on Capitol Hill.
- Ability to work nights and weekends.
- Ability and willingness to travel both locally and across the country for events and site visits throughout the year.
- Ability to represent MAZON publicly for groups of all ages and speak publicly in different settings (from formal speaking engagements with groups of 20+ adults, to leading educational programming with children anywhere between the grades of K-12).
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- 3 to 5 years experience in anti-hunger, social justice and/or public policy outreach and engagement.
- Able to comfortably interact with diverse audiences including nonprofit and community groups.
- Experience in public speaking.
- Excellent written and verbal communication as well as analytical, critical thinking skills and interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a team that includes members at other locations.
- Ability to take initiative and develop program areas.
- Ability to set and meet own deadlines.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize assignments effectively, meet multiple and competing demands, and follow projects through to completion.
- Familiarity with the nonprofit and philanthropic communities.
- Willingness and ability to travel required.
- Familiarity of and experience with Jewish culture
- Problem solving skills
- Experience or comfort with operating in knowledge organization; a creative and reflective thinker
- Experience working collaboratively with colleagues, in coalitions and among diverse groups
- Understand importance of cultural competence
Compensation and Benefits:
MAZON offers a compensation package that includes a competitive salary range of $75,000 to $81,000. Employer-paid benefits include comprehensive medical insurance as well as Life/Disability/AD&D insurance. Other benefits include a 401K plan with an employer match, FSA participation, and dental, vision, and AFLAC insurance at a discounted group rate. MAZON offers a very generous vacation and sick time plan and holiday schedule, including all major Jewish holidays. We close early on Fridays in observance of Shabbat. We have a fun office environment (even virtually!) and a fantastic team who are dedicated to the meaningful work we do.
