The Secular Jewish Community & School (http://www.secularjewish.org/), which meets in Oak Park, Illinois, is an organization committed to teaching and celebrating Jewish history, culture, music, literature, values and identity in a secular, humanistic context.

We are seeking experienced, enthusiastic teachers for our pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten classroom (ages 4 through 6), and 1st/2nd grade classroom (ages 6 through 8). Class size is typically 8 to 10 students, and teacher’s assistants are provided. Classes involve hands-on activities to teach students about secular Judaism. Creativity is encouraged. Knowledge of Judaism is required; experience with secular Jewish communities is desired.

Hebrew fluency is not required; the school does not offer Hebrew classes.

Teachers work approximately three Sunday mornings a month from September through May, a total of 27 class sessions per school year. Normal working hours are from 9:15 am to 12:15 pm. Additional paid time is provided for curriculum development, parent communication, training, and periodic meetings with the Sunday School Committee and fellow teachers. Weekly pay during the school year is approximately

$120-$135 per class session, depending on experience. Total annual compensation is around $4,000 to $5,000. 

TEACHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • All teachers are required to focus on the secular aspects of A curriculum will be provided, and consultation with previous teachers is available.
  • Teachers are required to develop individual, written weekly lesson plans to implement the appropriate grade level curriculum of the school.
  • Teachers are required to attend an orientation and training meeting in late August and two to three additional meetings with the Sunday School Committee. These meetings are paid time.

TEACHERS’ QUALIFICATIONS:

--Teaching experience with preschool or elementary school age students.

--Knowledge and appreciation of Jewish holidays, culture, and civilization.

--Commitment to implement a curriculum that teaches secular, humanistic Judaism.

Our community is led by our members -- a diverse group of about 50 families who have come together from different backgrounds to practice a secular, humanistic Judaism.
