Specifically, the program officer will work with the program director in leading the Foundation’s U.S. Jewish grants portfolio, which provides approximately $25 million in grants each year across three priorities: (1) addressing poverty within the Jewish community, (2) strengthening the Jewish nonprofit sector, and (3) combatting antisemitism.

Overall Responsibilities

  • Strategy Development: Help shape the vision, strategy, and grant priorities of the portfolio and support the design and implementation of strategic initiatives and special projects.
  • Grant Management: Source grant applicants that are aligned to strategies, evaluate proposals for feasibility and organizational capability, build relationships with grantees, and manage compliance with grant deadlines.
  • Evaluation and Learning: Assess the impact of both individual grants and the portfolio at large, analyzing grant reports and synthesizing learnings that will inform future grantmaking.
  • Site Visits and Conferences: Perform in-person site visits and represent the Foundation at conferences and events with relevance to the portfolio.
  • Collaboration and Presentation: Work collaboratively with program officers and other Foundation staff to prepare materials and analysis for board meetings and participate in weekly discussions regarding grants.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience and Skills: Five to 10 years of experience in nonprofit, philanthropy, or other relevant sectors, with strong writing, research, and critical-thinking abilities, as well as demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the areas of philanthropy and the Jewish nonprofit sector.
  • Collaboration and Initiative: Team player with a positive and proactive attitude who is capable of solving challenges creatively and independently, managing time efficiently, and collaborating effectively with colleagues and partners.
  • Analysis and Communication: Proficiency in analyzing data, budgets, forecasts, and other materials and an ability to present it in clear and actionable formats.
  • Values and Approach: Track record of integrity, humor, and thoughtfulness, demonstrating a commitment to confidentiality and seeing the strengths in people and communities.
