POSITION OVERVIEW 

Reporting to the Associate Director of Finance, the Senior Accountant will be a critical member of the Finance/Accounting team, advancing the systems and work of the department. Working collaboratively with other finance team members (including Staff Accountant, Executive Administrative Manager, Finance, and subcontractors), the Senior Accountant is responsible for leading all daily accounting operations, preparing & monitoring annual budgets, performing monthly reconciliations, generating internal and external reports, and working closely with the external auditor and tax advisor. 


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Plans, implements and manages daily accounting operations. 
  • Maintains necessary controls around day-to-day full cycle activities of accounts, ledger, accounts receivable, invoicing/billing, accounts payable, cash disbursements, fixed asset records, expense reports and credit cards.
  • Ensures timely and accurate processing of charitable pledges, cash receivables, and credit card contributions and online receipts, to ensure timely and accurate reporting, invoicing collections, and proper tax reporting to donors.
  • Leads the annual audit process, including preparing required documentation, coordinating with external auditors, and ensuring timely resolution of any findings or recommendations.
  • Completes timely and accurate monthly closings, including reconciliation of bank and credit card statements, expense reports, and development of department reports.
  • Coordinates and performs functions related to month-end close, reconciliations, accruals, and financial reporting.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with GAAP, internal policies and industry-specific rules and regulations.
  • Leverages newly integrated systems to optimize accounting and finance reporting to better support organizational advancement and integrations.
  • Prepares submission for reimbursement reports to international governmental authority.
  • Other related job duties as assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS

  •  
  • Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree in a related field (or equivalent work experience and training) a plus. CPA (active, inactive, or planning to sit) preferred.
  • 3-5+ years of progressively responsible accrual-based, nonprofit accounting with revenue streams from individual contributions and grant funding.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct is strongly preferred; Sage Intacct Certification is a plus.  
  • Familiarity with Salesforce integrations and Bill.com highly desirable.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office software (especially Excel and PowerPoint), including ability to develop models and spreadsheets with multiple linking.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to educate and work with team members within the finance department and across all other departments.
  • Ability to achieve results with minimal supervision. Hands-on mentality a must. 
  • Some experience with international transactions.
  • Proven ability and willingness to continually develop skills related to use of rapidly changing technology.
  • Ability to travel to home office in Rockville, Maryland occasionally.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours as needed, including nights and Sundays, during events and meetings.

This is an exempt position. The salary range is $80,000 - $90,000 annually, depending on relevant experience.
