Youth Group Advisor
Beth El is a pluralistic community that welcomes members who have diverse backgrounds, ideas, levels of knowledge, and observance. We are an egalitarian Conservative congregation of about 350 families located in the heart of beautiful thriving, historic Durham near Duke’s East Campus.
Beth El Synagogue of Durham is looking for an enthusiastic, engaged, and experienced Youth Group Advisor to work with our Kadima and USY (middle school and high school) groups. This role will require someone equally capable of interfacing with teens and adults, helping to plan vibrant programming for our teens as well as facilitating communication between parents, teens, and Beth El staff. This person should be able to provide creative programming, have excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, and be able to communicate effectively. Other essential qualifications include: ability to multitask, make decisions in a timely manner and have excellent follow-through, and generally be responsive, creative, positive, and a team player.
The Youth Group Advisor will be …
- A bright, talented, entrepreneurial self-starter who can envision and execute new and innovative ideas
- Jewishly knowledgeable (holidays, customs, service leading, etc.).
- An expert in teens with a youthful spirit. Teens should love to be around you and you should love to be around them.
- A leader and a builder of relationships. You should easily connect with teens, parents, professional staff and lay leaders.
- Able to effectively recruit and retain participants.
- A stellar collaborator, flexible, eager to brainstorm with colleagues within and outside of Beth El.
- Supervised by Education and Youth Director (EYD).
Specific Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Initiating one-to-one outreach to 6th-12th graders, whether or not they are currently engaged, to form relationships, learn about their interests, and draw them into deeper Jewish involvement.
- Communicating regularly with parents as well to keep them in the loop.
- Serving as the Kadima/USY Youth Advisor: Creating a variety of fun and compelling programs over the academic year (approximately one event per month), doing outreach to engage kids in the community, and fostering a sense of community and engagement within the group.
- Collaborating with other area youth advisors and encouraging attendance at USY regional events; attending said events when applicable.
- Submitting monthly reports to the Education Committee and attending monthly committee meetings when possible.
- Providing support to the EYD by helping organize and publicize youth department events and set up and shop for in-person programs.
- Duration: Part-Time
Candidates who are interested in taking on additional responsibilities as a teacher may receive an offer to teach in the school for additional compensation, if an appropriate position is available. Talmud Torah meets Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30pm and Sundays from 9:30am-12:30pm from September through May.
Salary: $10,000-14,000/year
Preferred Experience: Bachelor’s degree, plus work experience in a relevant work setting (e.g., Jewish education and camping, non-profit, or teen-focused organization). Volunteer management. Basic web and social network skills.
