Westchester Day School is seeking a highly qualified, passionate, and collaborative teacher of Science in the middle school grades (Grades 5-8). The candidate will be a role model who can help foster our students’ social, emotional, and academic growth, implement a variety of instructional strategies, and who has familiarity with the latest educational models to enhance student learning for the 21st century. Westchester Day School cares deeply about our students at an individual level; promotes teacher collaboration on curriculum and instruction; and encourages active participation by teachers in the greater school community. This position reports to the Director of the Upper Division.

 About the School 

Established in 1948 in Mamaroneck, NY, Westchester Day School, a Modern Orthodox, co-educational, dual curriculum Jewish elementary school (2-year-olds through 8th grade), prepares students to live as mensches and lifelong learners and inspires them to impact the world around them by cultivating a commitment to Torah, midot, community and academic rigor. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive science curriculum for middle school students that aligns with state and national standards.
  • Create and deliver engaging lesson plans that incorporate hands-on experiments, interactive activities, and real-world applications.
  • Use a variety of teaching methods and instructional materials to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
  • Work as part of a cooperative and diverse team of educators and administrators to carry out the mission of Westchester Day School
  • Assess and evaluate student progress through assignments, tests, and observations, providing timely and constructive feedback.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and curiosity.
  • Collaborate with other teachers, staff, and administration to support student learning and school initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance and attendance.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians to discuss student progress and address any concerns.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in science education.
  • Organize and supervise extracurricular science activities, such as STEM day, science fairs or clubs.
  • Adhere to administration policies and rules

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Science, Secondary Education, and/or equivalent
  • An understanding of effective science instruction and content, including scientific and engineering practices
  • An appreciation for lab work and projects as a means of engaging students, while gathering and providing specific feedback to guide student learning
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • An understanding of child/adolescent development and how social emotional factors impact learning
  • An ability to build relationships with students that foster a positive classroom environment where students feel safe to make mistakes and take academic risks
  • A belief that all children can learn at high levels
  • Excellent computer skills
  • A willingness to continuously grow and learn as a professional in collaboration with colleagues

Salary range for this role is $65,000- $80,000, depending upon education and experience.
