Sunrise Day Camp-Chicago, a program of JCC Chicago, is a proud member of the Sunrise Association, whose mission is to bring back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings worldwide. Sunrise accomplishes this through the creation and oversight of welcoming, inclusive summer day camps, year-round programs, and in-hospital recreational activities, all offered free of charge. 

The Pediatric Inpatient Program Coordinator (Sunrise) will work under the supervision of the Sunrise Day Camp Director. They will plan and oversee all in-hospital programming, year-round programs and help with the recruitment of campers in accordance with the mission of camp. The coordinator will build relationships with families and staff, provide quality results, and be a role model to all volunteers and families.

 Key Areas of Responsibility: 

  •  Attend and lead all Sunrise on Wheels in hospital programs 4+ mornings a week (hospitals include but not limited to Rush, Lurie’s and Advocate Park Ridge)
  • Work with the coordinator of volunteers within JCC Chicago
  • Recruit, Supervise, Support, and Train Volunteers for hospitals. 
  •  Oversee volunteer scheduling, annual reviews, hospital qualifications, and input on program. 
  • Follow all health and safety guidelines and requirements in hospital and within the Sunrise Wheels standards.
  • Plan and order supplies to go with monthly Wheels themes. 
  • Stock and make sure all supplies are in good working condition and cleaned.
  •  Distribute Sunrise marketing materials to hospitals (both partnering and non-partnering hospitals)  
  •  On-going correspondence and communication with hospitals
  • Monthly touchpoints for staff in hospital to connect with Sunrise.
  • Distribute Sunrise marketing materials to families who are eligible for camp. 
  • Create leads in campminder of potential camp families. 
  • Maintain and communicate with hospital staff, social workers, CLS, in both partnering hospitals and non-partnering hospitals. 
  • Work with Hospital staff to plan and/or attend hospital events or created Sunrise events (i.e. holiday parties, picnics, or family events)  
  • Attend 3-4 regional meetings per year to discuss program updates, share strategies, and connect with other Association coordinators. 
  • Report Session Notes after each site is visited to the association and camp director.   
  • Create and distribute Sunrise Anytime bags. 
  • Help plan and attend Sunrise Fundays-year-round family programming. 
  •  During the camp season, attend camp in Lake Zurich 1-2 days a week, depending on schedule to help with programming and maintain relationships with families. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:  

  • College degree preferred. 
  • Experience in education, child life, social work preferred. 
  • Supervisory experience highly preferred. 
  • Ability to lead and direct volunteers.  
  • Ability to plan and implement daily and special hospital programs. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with volunteers, families, and Hospital staff. 
  • Demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for creating a warm, inviting, and inclusive environment for children, their families and hospital staff. 

Key Essential Job Duties/Physical Duties:

  • Lift/move children up to 40 lbs.
  • Demonstrate physical stamina and agility required to be mobile for long periods throughout the day.
  • Stand for long periods of time and be able to run and actively engage physically with children.
  • React with physical and mental alertness in emergency situations.
  • Use hands for grasping equipment and play material.
  • Supervise children by sight and sound.
  • Must be able to rotate head side to side to scan the environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate, motivate and communicate with children and adults.
  • Ability to speak clearly and articulately with a loud tone of voice.
  • Mental alertness; sustain concentration for long periods of time.
  • Mental abilities:  Attention to detail; manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • React with physical and mental alertness in emergency situations and assist in evacuation of building.
  • This position requires hospital onboarding including but not limited to health and medical clearances and up to date vaccines.  
  • Must have reliable transportation.
