SUMMARY
Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York is the oldest Reform synagogue in New York City, grounded in a rich history of Jewish communal leadership in the city and beyond. Our congregation is dynamic and forward-looking and as our current membership of 2,400 families grows, we remain committed to ensuring that new and current members alike, as well as non-members who connect with us in various ways, have high-quality and meaningful experiences in all aspects of synagogue life.
The Membership Assistant provides administrative and programmatic support and reports to the Assistant Director of Membership. This person will be a member of the temple’s Engagement Team as well as the High Holy Day team. The position’s working hours are normally 9 AM to 5 PM Monday-Friday. This position does require additional work outside these normal hours, including in the evenings and on weekends.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Member Services / Outreach
- Provide high levels of internal and external customer service to members and the wider temple community
- Outreach to and welcome new and prospective members
- Staff some special and regular Friday evening Shabbat services, lifecycles (12 Saturdays a year), and other events (which may occur during the evening or on weekends)
- Help plan, execute, attend, and follow up on a wide array of member programs
- Provide phone and email coverage for the general Membership Department daily and for the entire temple periodically
- Assist with administrative support for member engagement and volunteer programs, such as lifecycle recognitions, Shabbat Greeters and Tikkun Olam
Database and Record Management (via Salesforce & Mailchimp)
- Enter data into Salesforce and Mailchimp, ensuring that information is up to date
- Collaboration with the Salesforce User Group
- Process Membership applications and activate membership records
- Produce real-time reports on member demographics and member trends for the Membership Committee, Board of Trustees, and Senior Leadership
- Assist in the preparation of annual Membership renewals and monthly billing
High Holy Day Preparations
- Collaborate with the High Holy Day team in preparation for and throughout the High Holy Days
- Engage with members during High Holy Day services
- Manage and provide exceptional customer support for member ticket reservations
- Assist with member and out-of-town visitor reciprocity requests
- Support and facilitate the production of new member welcome packages
- Provide on-site Help Desk assistance on both Rosh Hashanah Eve/Day and Yom Kippur Eve/Day

QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate for this position will possess or exhibit the following qualifications:
- 1-2 years of administrative, membership, programming, or other related work experience
- Ability to build relationships and interact effectively with a diverse group of staff, clergy and community members
- Professional work style, ability to represent the temple in public-facing roles
- Able to work independently and on a team, managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Self-motivated, thinks ahead, and takes initiative on projects
- Superior attention to detail and accuracy, highly developed organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Salesforce
- Enthusiasm for working in a historic Jewish congregation undergoing meaningful and exciting growth and change, understanding of/experience with Reform Jewish life a plus
