HEBREW LANGUAGE AT JLA _________________________________________________
JLA is committed to accepting mission-appropriate students who seek to grow in their understanding of and appreciation for Judaism, irrespective of any prior experience with Jewish learning, Hebrew language, and irrespective of their or their family’s personal level of observance. On campus and at all school functions, Jewish life and learning will be conducted in accordance with Modern Orthodox standards and perspectives.
All JLA students will take Hebrew twice a week from 6th grade through 12th grade. The two periods per week will be supplemented by the fact that the first month of school, every year, forgrades 9 through 12, will be spent in Israel. We are partnering with the Alexander Muss High School In Israel to create a completely immersive month-long experience for each grade that focuses solely on Hebrew Language, Tanach, Jewish History, Machshava, Zionism, and Contemporary Israel.
Some of our students will be coming from Jewish Day Schools and others will not. A few will come from native Hebrew speaking homes, the vast majority will not. There will therefore be multiple levels of Hebrew offered at every grade.
The focus of the Hebrew Language program at JLA will be spoken language. We believe that Hebrew Language programs in Jewish Day Schools often are not successful because of ???? ???? ?? ?????. We are therefore aiming to narrow the focus in order to improve the quality of the results. Our hope is to take what has been proven to work in the Ulpan model and implement it in our classrooms.
Despite the wide range of Hebrew backgrounds amongst our students, JLA is only accepting students capable of doing Honors level work or above. So the rigor of our courses should be high, even if the starting level of Hebrew proficiency is low.
