Job Summary/Objective:

 

The Security Director serves as the primary point of contact for Temple Israel, providing strategic leadership for all security aspects of the congregation.

 

This role involves managing security personnel, services, and operations, with a strong emphasis on building relationships with local security partners and congregants. Responsibilities also include coordinating special event logistics, resolving problems, and continuously enhancing security measures.

 

Furthermore, the Security Director ensures adherence to industry best practices and maintains a solid understanding of security and risk frameworks.

 

Reports to: Executive Director

 

Hours & Location:

  • Full-time, exempt
  • Hours to be determined in consultation with the Executive Director and Director of Facilities.
  • Expected to work the Jewish High Holy Days: Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah (first day only), Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur Day, which may fall on evenings and weekends.
  • Also expected to work other special events as designated, which may fall after regular business hours and on weekends.

 

Essential Duties / Key Responsibilities

Directs or completes tasks associated with these areas of responsibilities:

 

Security Staff Management:

  • Supervise and manage a team of six-armed security staff members.
  • Act as the primary contact for security during special events and holidays, including overseeing police personnel and third-party security vendors.
  • Manage all aspects of scheduling for the security team, developing strategies for effective coverage during ongoing programs and events, as well as for post and patrol schedules.
  • Coordinate and maintain all required state certifications and licenses for security staff.
  • Develop an onboarding plan for new security personnel.

 

Employee and Congregant Security:

  • Ensure Security Team meets Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) for Firearm Proficiency and Use of Force Continuum.
  • Develop Firearm Policy and Operation plan.
  • Develop and implement security plans and supervise security staff for daily activities, including the early childhood center, religious school, programming, and various regular gatherings.
  • Create and oversee security plans for the High Holy Days, Shabbat services, special events, and large gatherings.
  • Establish building access protocols for staff and congregants, including those for the early childhood center and religious school.
  • Developing and exercising lockdown procedures for both the early childhood center and religious schools.
  • Collaborate with outside partners to develop security training for staff and potentially congregants, covering topics such as active shooter preparedness, threat awareness, and response procedures.
  • Conduct security orientation for all new employees and provide presentations at orientations for nursery and religious school faculty/staff.
  • Offer security support during employee offboarding, including the retrieval and deactivation of entry fobs.

 

Threat Assessment:

  • Coordinate with local law enforcement authorities and review security briefings from organizations such as Secure Community Network and Jewish Community Security Inc.
  • Collaborate with external partners to conduct threat assessments of the campus, providing recommendations for new strategies and technologies to leadership.
  • Attend supplemental security training regularly to stay informed about the latest security trends.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with outside security and law enforcement contacts regarding security-related issues.

 

Security Infrastructure Duties (In collaboration with the Director of Facilities)

  • Research and recommend vendors for security-related services, overseeing the selection and engagement process.
  • Manage the access control database.

 

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, or a related field; or attendance at government-sponsored security or law enforcement schools, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience in security, military, or law enforcement.
  • Proficient in MCOLES standards, crisis management, investigative skills, security technology (CCTV), life safety / first aid, risk management, guest services, access control systems, and payroll/scheduling.
  • Ability to assess security threats based on information from law enforcement agencies.
  • Must meet and maintain specific skills, certifications, or authorizations required for the role, including:
    • Knowledge of various security and safety devices and controls
    • MCOLES Firearms Proficiency process
    • Workplace safety and security principles
    • Safety and security risk assessment and mitigation strategies
    • Incident/crisis management and command
    • Emergency response planning and execution
    • Physical security and basic technical security integration
  • Strong ability to provide effective direction to staff and maintain professionalism in high-pressure, emergency situations.
  • Excellent multitasking and time management skills.

 

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $115k-$130k
