DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Atlanta Jewish Academy (AJA) is a Modern Orthodox, Zionist, co-educational, preschool-12th grade independent Jewish Day School located in Sandy Springs, Georgia.

 

JOB OVERVIEW:

The Director will be responsible for raising the necessary dollars as reported in each budget year, as well as oversee the Student Scholarship Organization (SSO) GOAL program, which also raises tax-credit dollars for tuition assistance.  This position will create, organize, and implement the many events that raise the needed dollars. The Director is expected to cultivate new donors, solicit donations on an annual basis, and steward these financial supporters. The Director organizes and attends the LEADS program, an AJA  leadership initiative that prepares parents to join committees and serve on the Board of Directors. The Director will also be responsible to run additional future campaigns the school foresees. The person who fills the position should be prepared to serve as a positive ambassador in the community

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Run the Annual Campaign
    • Design and implement the various events and fundraising activities that generate the funds required by the budget. Works together with the Board Development Committee Chair on a list of items that includes (but is not limited to):
      • Direct mail and email campaigns
      • In-person solicitations
      • Recruit and manage a team of volunteers
      • Run the following annual events:
        • Crowdfunding campaign
        • Poker/Trivia Tournament
        • Evening of Honor
        • Golf/Pickleball Tournament 
  • Implement the Comprehensive Capital Campaign
    • Continues the efforts of the incumbent Director (and our fundraising consultants) to raise the infusion of dollars that will bridge AJA from its storied past to its bright future
      • Raise dollars for the capital needs, and for staff recruitment and retention
      • Oversee the Campaign Chairs and steering committee
        • Assign tasks, ensure follow through
      • Create relationships with the donor class
      • Successfully solicit large gifts to support AJA
      • Complete the loop by collecting the gifts and thanking the donors
  • Oversee the Director of GOAL at AJA
    • Supervise AJA’s implementation of the Georgia State tax benefit program that revenues over $500,000 for AJA
      • Advise on new ways of recruiting people or business to allocate their tax dollars to AJA
      • Ensure all materials and calls are done in a timely manner
      • Account for all pledged dollars as collected for the SSO
  • Grants
    • Zalik foundation
      • Monitor and report on the Jewish Community Professional (JCP) grants
      • Continue to develop relationships with the foundation directors
    • Federation of Atlanta
      • Develop relationships with the convening Jewish organization of the city
    • Federal Security
      • Continue to brings funds from government sources to AJA to provide cameras, lighting, and technology to enhance the security of the building
    • Explore new sources of funding
    • Finding and writing grants with other foundations and government agencies.
  • Special Projects
    • Alumni 
      • Create an alumni giving platform
      • Collaborate with Marketing to communicate with the alumni
      • Organize and run alumni events
      • Employ strategic and targeted solicitation of the alumni group
    • Legacy Giving
      • Work with local attorneys to identify specific donors who will name AJA as a beneficiary in estate planning
    • Manage the relationship of the HOS with the Donor Class
    • Engage with Sandy Springs and Atlanta Politicians and Police personnel
  • Organize and work with the LEADS Chairs
    • 6 -7 meetings for the program, 1 time per week over a number of weeks
    • Follow the curriculum that has been created and yet give the chairs room to improve
    • Advise and guide chairs and participants 
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer

The Director of Development reports directly to the Head of School. The Director works closely with the Marketing Department to develop materials for the annual campaigns and for the specific needs of the comprehensive campaign. AJA’s Development team is currently composed of the Development Director and one other professional who focuses almost entirely on the GOAL fundraising project. The Administrative team features an Executive Administrative Assistant who will work with the Director on some of the projects; the Director currently does much of their own clerical work. 

Applicants who are already familiar with the Veracross and CMS platforms will present as stronger candidates. Demonstrated abilities to learn new software platforms quickly will enhance a candidate’s presentation. 

The Jewish Community Professional grant (see Zalik JCP above) ensures that applicants with K-12 grade students will be able to send those children to AJA at 50% off the expected tuition.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have 5+ years of experience in philanthropy
  • Must have a college degree 
  • Must show successful growth in each position you have maintained
  • Must have interpersonal skills and be an active listener
